The Rams averaged 8.6 yards per rushing attempt against the Cowboys in Week 7 on 14 attempts with two running backs, two receivers and a tight end. I'll be curious to see how the 49ers' running game fares against the Cowboys in Week 12.

The 49ers have shown different offensive priorities since Mike Singletary took over as head coach.

An injury to tight end Delanie Walker is also affecting this team. With Walker out, the 49ers were primarily a three-receiver team against the Rams in Week 11. Frank Gore carried eight times for 72 yards with five first downs when the 49ers had three receivers and a tight end on the field. The 49ers averaged 7.0 yards per attempt on five passes (with two first downs) from this group. Let's see how this group fares in the coming weeks.

The 49ers ran the ball on 12 of 16 plays with more than one tight end on the field. I would expect a few more pass plays from the two-tight end offense once Walker returns (and he might not this week).

Download the 49ers' full offensive personnel report from this game here. I'll provide a few related observations below.

Among the things I saw:

  • Left guard David Baas sealing Rams defensive tackle Clifton Ryan, then turning to clear out linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa on Gore's 37-yard run early in the game.
  • Baas pulling across the formation to clear out a linebacker on Gore's early 5-yard touchdown run.
  • Shaun Hill telling tight end Vernon Davis where to line up before a 20-yard pass play to Isaac Bruce.
  • Davis splitting safeties Oshiomogho Atogwe and Corey Chavous on his 2-yard scoring reception after Gore motioned out of the backfield to the same side.
  • Rams linebacker Will Witherspoon missing tackles.
  • Davis doing enough as a run blocker to free Gore even when the defensive lineman had the overall advantage.
  • Davis' pass protection helping to free Jason Hill for a 22-yard reception.
  • Shaun Hill effectively buying time with his movement and then finding targets downfield, including running backs DeShaun Foster and Michael Robinson.
  • Hill, a receiver, chopping down Tinoisamoa, a linebacker, to help Gore gain 10 yards on second-and-9 in the third quarter.
  • Baas showing awareness in pass protection, helping out left tackle Joe Staley after Rams defensive end James Hall broke through.
  • Baas alertly sealing off Leonard Little as Shaun Hill scrambled for a short gain.
  • Offensive coordinator Mike Martz mixing in a couple of Wildcat-type formations late in the game. Not sure if he was amusing himself during the latter stages of a blowout, keeping the players interested, forcing opponents to prepare for it, etc.
  • J.T. O'Sullivan taking a huge hit from La'Roi Glover on the only pass play he ran after replacing Hill late in the game. Just like old times.
  • Chilo Rachal going after a defender several yards downfield when everyone else seemed to be content running out the clock.
  • Rachal pulling and burying Chavous cleanly but unnecessarily on the 49ers' final offensive play. I say this admiringly. He was playing hard in garbage time. It can't be long before the 49ers give him a start.

San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, Rams-49ers, personnel, Shaun Hill, Frank Gore, Isaac Bruce, Jason Hill, Vernon Davis, Mike Martz, Mike Singletary, David Baas, Leonard Little, J.T. O'Sullivan, Chilo Rachal, Corey Chavous, Oshiomogho Atogwe, DeShaun Foster, Joe Staley, Delanie Walker
