KIRKLAND, Wash. -- The Seahawks nearly made it through practice without an injury scare today, but that changed when defensive tackle Rocky Bernard hurt his right ankle late in the session.

The team was relieved to learn the injury was most likely minor. Bernard was eventually able to put all his weight on the ankle while rising from a kneeling position. But the scene served as another reminder that the Seahawks are reaching their limits in terms of sustainable injuries.

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck missed practice again today. Charlie Frye took first-team reps in anticipation of an expanded role in the second exhibition game. Seneca Wallace is still the No. 2 quarterback, of course, but Frye needs the work. Frye connected with tight end John Carlson for an over-the-shoulder grab that served as a highlight of practice.

Wallace returned punts in practice. He is also a fallback option at receiver if the injury situation worsens at that position. That is why the team wants Frye to develop into a viable option in relief. If the Seahawks can send Frye into a game with some confidence, they can feel better about using Wallace's options as a returner or receiver.
