Training camp roster analysis: Rams

Let's follow up our Cardinals roster analysis with a look at the Rams. Spending two days in their camp allowed me to speak with players, speak with coaches, watch practices, see a scrimmage and get an overall feel.

Note: Injuries and other factors can change situations in an instant. Stuff these under the mattress and resist taking them to the bank, in other words. It's barely August.

How to read the analysis: Numbers in parenthesis following position names indicate how many players the Rams are carrying on their roster at that position. The average number kept since 2003 refers to the number of players the Rams kept on their opening-day rosters.

Quarterbacks (4)
Average number kept since 2003: 2.8
Locks: Marc Bulger, Trent Green
On the bubble: Bruce Gradkowski, Brock Berlin
Comment: The Rams' recent scrimmage shed little light on the race between Gradkowski and Berlin.

Running backs (8*)
Average number kept since 2003: 5.6
Locks: Steven Jackson, Brian Leonard, Antonio Pittman
On the bubble: Dan Kreider, Russ Weil, Lance Ball, Richard Owens, Travis Minor
Comment: Owens swings between running back and tight end. Kreider figures to have the edge at fullback if he's healthy.

* Jackson does not count toward the 80-man roster limit while on the reserve/did not report list.

Wide receivers (12)
Average number kept since 2003: 5.4
Locks: Torry Holt, Keenan Burton, Donnie Avery, Dante Hall, Drew Bennett
On the bubble: Reche Caldwell, Dane Looker, Derek Stanley
Also: Matt Caddell, Shaine Smith, Marques Hagans, Brandon Williams
Comment: The Rams aren't sure how the position will sort out after Bruce. Bennett is the likely No. 2. Hall is more of a return specialist. The staff likes Avery and Burton, but injuries have kept both from competing as much as the Rams would have liked.

Tight ends (4)
Average number kept since 2003: 3.0
Locks: Randy McMichael, Anthony Becht, Joe Klopfenstein
Also: Nick Cleaver
Comment: McMichael could become a go-to target for Bulger. Becht is more of a blocker. Klopfenstein looks the part, but he hasn't met expectations yet.

Offensive linemen (15)
Average number kept since 2003: 9.2
Locks: Orlando Pace, Jacob Bell, Brett Romberg, Mark Setterstrom, Richie Incognito, Alex Barron, John Greco
Looking safe: Brandon Gorin, Adam Goldberg
On the bubble: Nick Leckey, Donovan Raiola, Roy Schuening, Dustin Fry
Also: Julius Wilson, Mark LeVoir
Comment: Thirteen offensive linemen started games for the Rams last season. A healthy Pace makes everyone on offense feel better.

Defensive line (13)
Average number kept since 2003: 8.4
Locks: Leonard Little, James Hall, Victor Adeyanju, Chris Long, La'Roi Glover, Adam Carriker, Clifton Ryan, Eric Moore
Also: Henry Smith, Vernon Bryant, Willie Williams, C.J. Ah You
Comment: The defensive line appears set, barring injuries. Little's resurgence is key for the defense.

Linebackers (9)
Average number kept since 2003: 6.2
Locks: Pisa Tinoisamoa, Will Witherspoon, Chris Draft, Quinton Culberson, David Vobora, Chris Chamberlain
Also: Marcus Riley, Marc Magro, Tim McGarigle
Comment: Culberson appears ready to displace Draft as the starter on the strong side. An injury to a starter could set back the defense significantly.

Defensive backs (13)
Average number kept since 2003: 9.8
Locks: Tye Hill, Fakhir Brown, Ron Bartell, Justin King, Corey Chavous, O.J. Atogwe, Todd Johnson, Jonathan Wade
On the bubble: Jerome Carter, Eric Bassey, David Macklin
Also: Darius Vinnett, Corney Grixby
Comment: The Rams could use another safety.

Specialists (4)
Average number kept since 2003: 2.6
Locks: Josh Brown, Donnie Jones, Chris Massey
Also: Justin Medlock
Comment: Medlock could help a team needing a kicker. He asked to be traded or released, but the Rams have declined to move.
