Matt Maiocco of Instant 49ers shares a transcript from his exclusive zero-word interview with new receiver Isaac Bruce, who showed up to practice today wearing Jerry Rice's jersey number. Bruce will wear No. 88 this season, but he wore No. 80 in practice today. That's his old number with the Rams, and one Rice wore with distinction for close to two decades in the NFL. What's the thinking? Well, Bruce apparently plans to let his play do the talking. He would only mumble something under his breath to Maiocco, who couldn't make out the potential words. When I was in 49ers camp, Bruce conducted a group interview while seated on a stool in front of his locker with his back turned to his questioners, offering clipped answers. And to think, the 49ers are undefeated!
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee sheds light on the changing quarterback rotation in 49ers camp. Alex Smith, Shaun Hill and J.T. O'Sullivan apparently have no idea how many reps each quarterback will get on a given day. The team's plan seems to be evolving. Or at least the part of the plan the team has decided to share with the public.
David Fucillo of NinersNation.com can't figure out the quarterback situation, and he raises a potential issue with shuttling so many quarterbacks through the offense: "My biggest concern is in the timing. I'd imagine there is a bit of a difference between chucking passes to Jason Hill, Ashley Lelie and Josh Morgan vs. Isaac Bruce, Bryant Johnson and Arnaz Battle." I would think the 49ers would settle on a starter after, say, the second exhibition game. That would allow the starter to play deeper into the third exhibition game, which is generally when teams play their starters the longest. The starter could then work a series or more in the final exhibition game just to sharpen up. But if we've learned anything about the 49ers and quarterbacks recently, it's to expect the unexpected.
Oh, and an injury update from Maiocco: Kentwan Balmer, Ashley Lelie and Mark Roman appear close to practicing as they rehab from injuries.
Programming note: We'll check back in a bit with a report from the Seahawks' scrimmage. I'm at Rams camp, but I'll get reports from people in attendance.
