Bears linebackers have different responsibilities

We've had a fair amount of discussion around here about the Chicago Bears defense and how some of its tendencies seem to have changed over previous years. (See our second-ever "Have at it" feature for more details.)

In that vein, I thought it was interesting to listen Wednesday as a Minnesota reporter asked Vikings coach Brad Childress and Bears coach Lovie Smith about those changes. Childress acknowledged the Bears' linebackers are more active, while Smith laughed and said everything is the same.

Here's a transcript of each coach's full answer:

CHILDRESS

They're just more active. They're jumping in and out of the line of scrimmage and they're comfortable with it. They know where their end spot needs to be. Sometimes they play in the line of scrimmage all of the time and sometimes they step back to their regular positions. It makes you constantly communicate within the offensive line. It looks like they've done some offseason work and changed. I'm not going to say the overall structure of the defense has changed, but what they're allowing those linebackers to do and what they want them to do in terms of being active and moving around, whether it's being at the end of the line of scrimmage or one of the gaps, but they're showing you a multitude of looks.

SMITH

Well, you have got to ask Brad [Childress] about those things. We are just playing our same old cover two defense is what we are doing. Nothing's changed. Make sure you tell Brad that.
