Runyan reserving judgment on Shawn Andrews

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Eagles offensive tackle Jon Runyan listened as Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews addressed his teammates for the first time since arriving in training camp Sunday. Runyan wants to believe that Andrews is truly sincere about suffering from depression, but something doesn't seem right about it.

"It's hard to believe it because I know how he is," Runyan said. "Knowing him, he could be playing a joke on all of us."

From the start, Runyan hasn't been able to muster much sympathy for Andrews, in part, because the rest of the team has been working so hard to prepare for the 2008 season.

"I'm not going to sit around and wait for you to show up," he said. "We can't wait on him."

But before you start criticizing Runyan, remember that he knows Andrews a lot better than we do. It sounds insensitive, but for whatever reason, he senses that Andrews is pulling the wool over the team's eyes.

Asked if he'd ever called to check on Andrews, Runyan said, "If Andy's calling and he's not responding, he's certainly not going to talk to me."

Runyan said that Andrews apologized to the team, but even that didn't impress the veteran player.

"He apologized a little bit, but if you're truly sick, what should you have to apologize for?"

Even local columnists don't really know what to make of the issue.

The league has had players with bipolar disorder and former Cowboys running back Herschel Walker recently wrote a book about a bizarre condition that he battled for years. That said, you rarely hear about athletes in the prime of their careers who are clinically depressed. I would think the Eagles might consider bringing in a psychologist to educate Andrews' teammates on what he may dealing with.

It's something that's quite prevalent in our society, but that doesn't mean professional football players will start going public with their struggles. In the aforementioned column, John Smallwood of the Daily News wonders if this is something that could hang over the team the entire season.

And the answer is, "of course." But to put Andrews on the shelf because he's dealing with a personal issue doesn't seem like the best answer. This is one of the best offensive linemen in football. If the Eagles try to keep him at arms length, they're doing themselves -- and Andrews -- a major disservice.

Keep reading for updates on L.J. Smith, Lito Sheppard and my neighbor Correll Buckhalter. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of my first practice Tuesday morning. And then I'm cruising into Albany for Giants camp. Fleetwood, if you're reading, go ahead and drive to Bethlehem tonight.
