Before we pass out helmet stickers for Week 6, let's reflect.
Florida and Georgia each began the season with national championship aspirations, and even though both teams have already lost games, those aspirations aren't dead.
That said, neither team currently finds itself atop the Eastern Division standings. That distinction belongs to Vanderbilt, which rallied past Auburn 14-13 on Saturday night to go to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the league. The Commodores are the only unbeaten team in the East and taking delight with each passing week in reminding the college football world that substance beats style every time. The Fighting Bobby Johnsons mean business. Now, onto the business of rewarding this week's winners:
Mackenzi Adams, quarterback, Vanderbilt: Often times, you're only as good as your backup quarterback in the SEC, and the Commodores have a good one and a proven one. For the second straight game, Adams stepped in for an injured Chris Nickson. This time, Adams came in with Vanderbilt trailing 13-0 late in the second quarter and added a spark to the Commodores' offense. He finished with 207 yards of total offense and threw a pair of touchdown passes.
Chris Smelley, quarterback, South Carolina: For a while there, it looked like Smelley was going to get caught up in one of the Head Ball Coach's juggling quarterback acts in favor of redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia, But Steve Spurrier stuck with Smelley, and that was a good thing for the Gamecocks. Smelley responded with a career-high 327 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-32 passing. He also led a 95-yard, 11-play drive in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Glen Coffee, running back, Alabama: The hard-running Coffee rushed for a career-high 218 yards on 25 carries, including a 78-yard touchdown run to open Alabama's scoring in its 17-14 win over Kentucky. It was the most rushing yards for an Alabama player since Shaun Alexander had a school-record 291 yards in 1996. The next challenge for Coffee is holding onto the ball a little tighter.
Emanuel Cook, safety, South Carolina: If you haven't noticed, the Gamecocks' defense is pretty stout, No. 1 in the country in total defense going into last weekend. Cook has been one of the tackle leaders for that defense the last two years. He had a huge game against Ole Miss with 14 tackles and also returned a fumble 42 yards to stave off a drive by the Rebels.
