It was a banner week for Big 12 teams as Oklahoma was named the No. 1-ranked team in both major polls on Sunday.
But that was only one highlight for the conference, which also notched three teams in the top five places, four teams in the top seven and six teams in the top 25.
In the Associated Press media poll, Oklahoma is first, Missouri is fourth, Texas is fifth, Texas Tech is seventh, Kansas 16th and Oklahoma State 21st.
The coaches voting in the USA Today poll have the Sooners first, Missouri third, Texas fifth, Texas Tech eighth, Kansas 16th and Oklahoma State 22nd.
It also marked the first time the Big 12 has had three teams in the top five in either poll since Nov. 18, 2001. For two weeks during that period, Nebraska was No. 2, Oklahoma was No. 4 and Texas was No. 5 in both polls.
Oklahoma was the first Big 12 team to be No. 1 in the coaches' poll since Texas in the final 2005 poll. It marked the first time a Big 12 team topped the AP poll since Missouri was No. 1 the week before the Big 12 championship game last season.
It was the first time that the Sooners were No. 1 in the poll since the last week of the 2003 regular season. The Sooners lost to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game the following week and haven't returned to the nation's top spot in either poll since then.
"We talked earlier this week that anyone can beat anybody on any given Saturday," Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford said after the game. "That's why you have to come out and play on edge every week. If not, someone's liable to come in and beat you."
It marked the 10th time the Big 12 has had six teams in the AP top 25 poll and the ninth time placing six teams in the coaches' rankings. It's the first time the Big 12 has had six teams in the coaches' poll since Sept. 7, 2003, and the first time with six teams in the media poll since Sept. 17, 2002.
In the AP poll, the Big 12 and SEC were tied with six ranked teams apiece. The Big Ten had three teams ranked among the top 25 and the Mountain West, Pac-10, Big East, WAC and Atlantic Coast all had two ranked teams. The same conference breakdown and the same teams were seen in the coaches' poll.
It also represented the first time that Oklahoma State has been ranked with Mike Gundy as head coach. The last time the Cowboys were ranked before today in the Associated Press poll was on Nov. 21, 2004, when Les Miles was coaching them.
Interestingly, the six teams in the Big 12 will not meet up in league action next week All six ranked teams will meet up with unranked foes in the first week of league action on Saturday.
