A Monday look around the conference:
* The South Carolina starting quarterback job is back up for grabs. Steve Spurrier said Chris Smelley and Tommy Beecher will compete for the job this week in practice. Whoever wins the job probably won't have top receiver Kenny McKinley to throw to. He's likely out against Georgia with a hamstring injury.
* Georgia to face an apologetic Steve Spurrier, who says it's only natural that fans would be wondering if the game has passed him by with the way the Gamecocks have played offense lately.
* Alabama gets a "wake-up call" in a lackluster win over Tulane. It's the kind of game the Crimson Tide might have lost a year ago.
* Chris Todd takes over as Auburn's quarterback, but Kodi Burns says he's not going away.
* Just in case, LSU adds Texas Stadium as a back-up if the North Texas game this weekend can't be played at Tiger Stadium because of Hurricane Ike and the remaining clean-up from Hurricane Gustav.
* Can the Vols turn it around? They're in a similar boat as last season, when they started 1-2 and still made it to the SEC championship game.
* Vanderbilt loses another receiver. Chris Reinert is out for the season after breaking his leg last week in the win over South Carolina. The Commodores have lost four receivers since the end of last season.
* This time, it's the Florida defense carrying the offense, as the Gators sputter offensively in their win over Miami.
* Kentucky is 2-0 with one of its best defenses in years, and some of the fans are booing. Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said it made him sick to his stomach. John Clay, the columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leader, asks, "What's wrong with you people?"
* Just call Bobby Petrino's Hogs "The Comeback Kids." They've rallied to win in the final minutes each of the first two weeks.
