Junior to Watch: Marcus Snipes

November 4, 2008 6:00 AM

By Sheldon Shealer

When St. Frances has a need, Marcus Snipes has filled it.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior has spent time at quarterback, receiver, defensive back, punter and kicker for the first-year program, and he's the main reason St, Frances is 3-3 entering its final two games of the season.

In six games, he has nearly 800 receiving yards. Coach Mike Clay just moved him to free safety at midseason and in three games he has four interceptions.

Snipes was one of Clay's rising stars at St. Mary's-AA, but when Clay and the school parted ways, Snipes followed his coach to Baltimore.

"He took a big chance to come here," Clay said. "I keep telling him, it will be better next year. We'll be in a league, things will return to normal."

Snipes has received early interest from Boston College and he is taking an unofficial visit to North Carolina this weekend. He was the MVP at a Boston College camp this past summer.

Clay's plan was to start 11 different players on each side of the ball, which lasted for about three weeks. At that point, he said, there was no way to keep Snipes off the field.

St. Frances, which did not finalize a program until July, will formally join the MIAA B Conference next year.
