Nations top talent converges on Olney

Football season may have a few games left, but those that have been waiting for basketball season to start do not have to look far or wait long to see some of the best talent in nation.

The Capital Bank Good Counsel Tip-off Classic enters its fourth season and will be held from Thursday Dec. 4 to Saturday Dec. 5.

"If you look at our tournament history and they guys who have made All-tournament. Almost everyone is a Division I athlete, Eric Barron Tournament Director said.

Former participants include St. Benedict's (N.J.) Samardo Samuels (Louisville) and Lance Thomas (Duke), Malcolm Delaney (Virginia Tech) Good Counsel's Jordan Clarke (Vermont) and Georgetown Prep's Garvey Young (Vermont).

This year's tournament is expected to have another host of future collegiate stars.

The field includes national teams Our Savior New American (N.Y.), Santa Rita (Ariz.), The Rock School (Fla.) and Wings Academy (N.Y.). Local teams participating are Good Counsel, National Christian Academy, Progressive Christian Academy and St. Mary's  AA.

Among this year's national talent is Santa Rita's Terrell Stoglin who is one of Arizona's top talents. Our Savior's Chris Hampton, Rayner Moquete and Ring Ayeul have all been receiving college interest.

Local players include National Christian Academy's Dante Taylor who is committed to Pittsburgh and Josten Thomas, Good Counsel's Julius Omoniurhie, St. Mary's Nick Groce and Progressive Christian's Jonathan Underwood who is committed to James Madison.

"The college coaches are coming from Memphis, Georgetown and Louisville to watch the talent this year, Barron said. "My favorite line is from coach [George Mason head coach Jim] Larranaga who said it's one stop shopping for the best talent in the country.

The first game tips off at 3 p.m. on Thursday with Our Savior New American against St. Mary's  AA. National Christian against Santa Rita follows at 4:45 p.m. Good Counsel plays Wings Academy at 6:30 p.m. followed by The Rock School against Progressive Christian Academy at 8:15.

Friday's games begin at 3 p.m. and Saturday starts at 10:30 a.m.
