Beverly Weaver, the lefty standout pitcher for the Virgina Stars ASA Gold team, refused to let an attack of mononucleosis stop her from getting her looks at the recent fall showcases.
While she missed more than a week of school, had to stop playing field hockey for the high school team, and went eighteen days without throwing a pitch, she still attempted to give it her all at the Newtown Rock Showcase in Penn. After two innings she became fatigued and was unable to continue.
After that disappointment, Weaver was determined to get back on the mound and she made another appearance this past weekend at the South Carolina Bandits Fall Showcase.
She battled through the tournament and was able to pitch in several games successfully and even performed well at the plate, although they had to use a runner for her.
Assistant Stars Coach Jan Greenhawk was also impressed with her toughness and her performance on the weekend despite her illness. She said, "Weaver did a great job with nice speed and location and had good mound presence and demeanor.
Weaver's hope is that this past weekend has helped to prepare her for this weekend's big Rising Stars Showcase in Fla.
Look for a determined Weaver on the mound this weekend battling not only her opponents, but an illness that, despite its wearing side effects, has yet to slow her down.
