When Gerrit Cole, a 2008 grad of Orange Lutheran, did not sign with the New York Yankees, after the bombers took the righty in the first round, the class headed off to Westwood looks to be one of the best in the nation. Currently, Collegiate Baseball, has the Bruins' classes tabbed as No. 6 and No. 1 in the state.
Cole, was selected by the Yankees as the No. 28 pick in last June's MLB Amateur Draft and with his enrollement in Westwood became the first high school player taken in the first round to attend UCLA. That according to a UCLA baseball press release. Baseball America rated him as the No. 4 player in the nation last year and he was selected to the 2007 Area Code Baseball Games and the 2007 AFLAC All American Game.
Another top high school standout is infielder Tyler Rahmatulla out of Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, Calif.). He had a stellar junior year that included a .351 average with three homers and 26 RBI. He was selected to play for the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code Team as well as represent the United States in 2006, on the Junior National Team.
Chris Amezquita is another talented freshman entering UCLA this year. He is an infielder out of Servte High School and hails from La Mirada, Calif. He, too, played for the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code Team in 2007. He was a four year varsity letter winner at Servite, but saw limited action his senior year because of an injury. Amezquita was also an AFLAC All American in 2007.
"We believe this is a class of players that can make an immediate impact in our program, Coach John Savage said in a released statement. "This group is very talented, one that should be as good as any incoming class in the country.
