VIDEO: Ivy League Brains

July 4, 2009 10:00 AM

By Christine Jinbo

St. Louis High Performance Volleyball (St. Louis, Mo.) had the biggest brains in the gym at the Boys Classic in Anaheim, Calif.  It has become, somewhat of a recent trend, for Ivy League schools that host mens' volleyball, to send their coaches recruiting in the same arena as UC Irvine, USC and other top NCAA Div. I programs.

Two Loyola (Los Angeles, Calif.) High School graduates, Michael Dye and Sean Cotter will head to Princeton (N.J.) in the fall and three St. Louis (Mo.) area athletes, who all play on St. Louis High Performance, will head to MIT (Boston, Mass.) and Harvard (Cambridge, Mass.).

These three athletes Matt Hohenberger, Rob Lothman and, Patrick Vatterott  spoke to ESPN RISE Volleyball about their choice to attend these academically rigorous schools.  Check out their video below.

ESPN RISE FAB 50 boys' volleyball ranking

March 19, 2009 7:33 PM

By Christine Jinbo

In week one of the ESPN RISE FAB 50 Rankings, teams from California jumped and fell in the ranking, as the Golden State played games of consequence. Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Missouri have yet to begin season and look to open up this week.  Hawaii teams have just begun early season play, with Div. I teams rolling through the first part of league play.

Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) remained atop the rankings as it bested the rest and most importantly, rival, Loyola (Los Angeles, Calif.) at the Best of the West Invitational. The Mustangs went through the tournament undefeated with a 6-0 record.

Costa's Ian Satterfield was awarded the tournament MVP and co-captain Evan Licht received All Tournament honors.  The two Costa captains spoke to ESPN RISE about the school's rivalry with Loyola.

ESPN RISE FAB 50 National boys' volleyball ranking

March 12, 2009 5:54 PM

By Christine Jinbo

  Eric Mochalski
  Leonard Xu/ESPN RISE
Eric Mochalski returns for Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach, Calif.
The top three schools in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national boys volleyball ranking acquired the reputation of producing superior teams year after year.  Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Punahou (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Wheaton Warrenville South (Wheaton, Ill.) do not rebuild, they reload each year with a crop of, what seems like, endless talent.  Although Mira Costa lost four starters to graduation, it restocked the arsenal with talent from three core returners including USA Junior National team member, Ian Satterfield. Legendary Coach Mike Cook, after 29 years as head coach of Mira Costa, quietly handed his Mustangs over to long time assistant, Mike Ninnis.  According to Ninnis, Coach Cook will sit on the bench assisting and will coach the junior varsity squad.

The Mustangs' schedule features top tier non-league opponents, including rival, Loyola (Los Angeles, Calif.) and top ranked Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.).  Unless the two schools meet in tournament play, Corona del Mar (Newport Beach, Calif.) is the only school left off this schedule of consequence.  Corona del Mar, ranked No. 4 and second in California, returned two USAV Junior National team players, Weston Nielsen and Dylan Davis.  Nielsen earned MVP honors at the NORCECA Youth Championships from amongst a talented U.S. squad.  Team USA did not drop a single set, en route to winning the gold medal.  The Sea Kings look to pose the biggest threat to Mira Costa's dominance on the left coast.(Read full post)

On the RISE: Falyn Fonoimoana

October 11, 2008 5:08 PM

Fonoimoana's imposing stare from across the net is enough to intimidate most girls.  At times, players have to shake their arms to regain feeling after a blow from one of the bullets she sent riffling at them.

  Falyn Fonoimoana

Falyn Fonoimoana swings at the Durango Classic.
In stark contrast, Fonoimoana emits an easy going grin as she waves to friends as she walks across the Mira Costa campus.  At 6-foot-4, and a head taller than most of her peers, she is easy to spot heading towards the gym where she picks up Coach Zimmerman's two children and takes them out to play.(Read full post)
