VIDEO: Ivy League Brains

July 4, 2009 10:00 AM

By Christine Jinbo

St. Louis High Performance Volleyball (St. Louis, Mo.) had the biggest brains in the gym at the Boys Classic in Anaheim, Calif.  It has become, somewhat of a recent trend, for Ivy League schools that host mens' volleyball, to send their coaches recruiting in the same arena as UC Irvine, USC and other top NCAA Div. I programs.

Two Loyola (Los Angeles, Calif.) High School graduates, Michael Dye and Sean Cotter will head to Princeton (N.J.) in the fall and three St. Louis (Mo.) area athletes, who all play on St. Louis High Performance, will head to MIT (Boston, Mass.) and Harvard (Cambridge, Mass.).

These three athletes Matt Hohenberger, Rob Lothman and, Patrick Vatterott  spoke to ESPN RISE Volleyball about their choice to attend these academically rigorous schools.  Check out their video below.

All in the O.C.

June 25, 2009 4:07 PM

It would be overstated to say that Riptides OC 17 Orange shocked the world when it beat No. 1 seeded OCVC 17-1 in the finals of the Boys Classic, hosted by the Southern California Volleyball Association in Anaheim, Calif.

Steady performances at the serving line, like this one from Chris Gibbons helped Riptides OC win the 17 Open Division.
Some may agree with the upset assessment, which is a valid opinion considering the player personnel on the OCVC team.  The OCVC team, seeded first in the 17 Open Division, contains three USA Volleyball junior National Team players, who either competed at the Select or Youth level for USA.  USA Volleyball named two players from OCVC to the 2009 USA Boys' Youth National Training Team, outside hitter Taylor Sander and middle blocker Spencer Rowe.

Though, the Riptides OC team should not be underestimated.  It has big game experience and has upset higher seeds in the past, namely OCVC.  Its steady play this tournament stemmed from its consistent serving and passing, which allowed the team to attack on every play.  The team defense made it difficult for other teams to score points and allowed the scrappy Riptides teams to stay in the game.

The squad also has big tournament finals experience.  The squad appeared in the finals of the Boys Invitational in January, a national event hosted by the SCVA.  Also, this is not the first time Riptides has beaten OCVC 17-1 in a playoff situation.  At the Boys Invitational, Riptides defeated No. 1 seeded OCVC  in the quarterfinals, 27-25, 20-25, 15-12.  With similar scores (except for game one), it prevailed once more, 15-25, 25-20, 15-10, in the finals of the Boys Classic.

Riptides OC setter Brett Anderson agreed with the first statement. (Read full post)

Vegas 18 Open report

February 26, 2009 3:50 PM

By Christine Jinbo

The Las Vegas Tournament is one of the premier tournaments for college recruiting.  The competition for the championship is also at stake along with millions of dollars in scholarships to schools around the country.  In 2008, Sunshine Volleyball Club (Los Angeles, Calif.) defeated Triangle Volleyball Club (Raleigh, N.C.), 25-23, 25-10 and neither team showed in the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championship finals where TCA (Southern Calif.) defeated Ime'Ike (Honolulu, Hawaii).  With a whole qualifier season to go, between now and the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics, it will be interesting to see if either of this year's Las Vegas finalists, Laguna Beach (Calif.) or Austin Juniors Volleyball (Texas) will persevere through it all.

The Vegas report

February 17, 2009 1:28 PM

By Christine Jinbo

The Vegas Classic was a trip to forget and not because of money lost at the gambling tables. The cold rain and the playing venues scattered across the city made the Vegas Classic a logistical nightmare.  The spirited matches and marathon rallies in the gold division made up for the scattered venues, and made the competition one to remember.

SCVA Junior Boys Invitational

January 16, 2009 7:02 PM

By Christine Jinbo

With girls' club volleyball getting underway, the boys' season reaches one of its last weekends in Southern California before the high school season hiatus.  The Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA), a region of USA Volleyball, hosts the Junior Boys Invitational, Saturday, January 17 through Monday, January 19.

Just down the road from the giant mouse, the tournament takes place adjacent to Disneyland, at the American Sports Center (ASC) in Anaheim, Calif.  The ASC boasts one of the largest wood floors in North America and houses 22 volleyball courts with state of the art equipment.  The wood floor is a major draw for the facility, which also houses the USA Men's National Volleyball Team.

Clubs from around the nation, from as far west as Hawaii and as far East as New York, attend the tournament for the high level competition. For those from the East Coast, the warm weather also draws teams to the Golden State. The Invitational, a USA Volleyball bid tournament, allocates 10 bids at this event, one of the highest, to the 2009 Jr. Boys National Championships.

Ann Davenport, mother to famous tennis star Lindsay Davenport, is the director of the SCVA and hosts the annual event as well as the Holiday Classic for boys. In addition to the boys program, Davenport runs the large girls contingency of the SCVA, which hosts the Las Vegas Classic and a Junior National Qualifier as well as tournaments with thousands of participants each week.
