ESPN RISE FAB 50

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS

Getting into the final top 10 of the ESPN RISE FAB 50 rankings in girls volleyball is beginning to resemble a line looking for the hottest tables at the trendiest restaurants.

Good seats are filling up fast and there's only a handful left to be had. Unlike the powerful maitre d', don't bother slipping us a $20 to make it easier for your team to gobble up one of those positions. We can't be bought.

One week after Muncie Burris won the Class 2A state title in Indiana to secure no worse than a No. 2 position for the final rankings, three more Midwest schools completed strong seasons with state championships and in effect have also wrapped up at least no worse than a No. 8 final national ranking.

For the second year in a row, Ursuline Academy (Cincinnati, Ohio) had the chance to end the season undefeated and this time the Lions capitalized as they defeated Dublin Coffman (Dublin, Ohio) in four sets for the Ohio Division I state championship.

Jade Henderson led the Lions with 16 kills while Christina Beer added 10 kills in the 25-16, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17 victory. Dani Reinert also had 48 assists while Kori Moster led the way with 15 digs as the Lions handed the Shamrocks their only loss of the season.

For the season, Ursuline Academy lost a total of just four sets out of 84 played and because of totals like that the team has jumped to No. 3 in this week's rankings. For losing to a team like that, Dublin Coffman only fell from No. 9 to No. 12.

In Illinois, Joliet Catholic captured its second straight Class 3A state championship in straight sets over Mater Dei of Breese. Recent ESPN RISE National Girls Athlete of the Week Annemarie Hickey had a match-best 13 kills as the Angels won the first set 25-20 and then rallied from a four-point deficit in the second set for the clinching 25-23 set victory.

With their 41st win, the Angels set a school record for wins in a season while losing just four sets out of a total of 87 sets all season long. Like Ursuline Academy, they also have secured a top five final national ranking but we will still move Ursuline one spot higher since that team is unbeaten and Joliet Catholic is not.

The final three of these teams to cement a final top 10 national ranking is Shakopee (Minn.), which has moved up to No. 8 this week after winning its third straight Class 3A state final.

Seeing the Sabers lose even a set this year was a rare sight but it was just one hiccup against Wayzata as they won in four sets in their state final.

Elizabeth Benusa, Mollie Geske, Claire Sames and Ashley Wittman were all named to the All-Tournament Team. In 88 total sets played this year, the Sabers never dropped more than one set to an opponent while losing a total of just four sets all season.

Next week, at least one and perhaps two more final top 10 slots will be sealed by winners of the Texas state tournament, which will be held from Thursday through Saturday at Strahan Coliseum on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos.

The California Interscholastic Federation state finals will be staged on Saturday, Dec. 5 at UC Irvine's Bren Events Center. Current FAB 50 No. 1 Archbishop Mitty hopes that the final top 10 position it secures on that night will be the best one of them all. The Monarchs will be going for their sectional title this weekend.

Updated FAB 50: Battle for No. 1

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS

With the Indiana state playoffs now in the books, the race to be the ESPN RISE Girls Volleyball FAB 50 national champion can be whittled down to just two teams.

Muncie Burris, as expected, wrapped up its 13th consecutive Class 2A state crown and in the process also put an exclamation point on an unblemished 40-0 record. The Owls recorded a straight set win over Southwood (Wabash, Ind.) by scores of 25-9, 25-8, 25-16 that continued their straight set dominance since they also won in straight sets in the semifinals over Brownstown Central.

University of Florida recruit Taylor Unroe and teammate Chelsea Toth each led the team with 10 kills while four different players recorded double digit dig totals.

The situation at the top of the FAB 50 is simple. If current No. 1 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) completes an unbeaten season next month and wins a divisional title at the California Interscholastic Federation state finals, then it would be No. 1 in the nation for the second straight season. If the Monarchs get upset, however, then it would go to Muncie Burris.

Other teams from around the country needed for Muncie Burris to somehow get knocked off in its state playoffs to have a shot at the final No. 1 ranking. That didn't come close to happening.

In the two other largest-class state finals held last weekend in Indiana, Brebeuf Jesuit (Indianapolis) knocked off top seed Yorktown in Class 3A while Muncie Central topped Elkhart Memorial (Elkhart) to win the Class 4A banner.

After losing in the semifinals the past two seasons, Brebeuf Jesuit not only made it to the finals but avenged its only loss of the season with a 25-21, 14-25, 25-15, 25-21 win over Yorktown. Sloan White led the Braves with 16 kills while Lauren Rafdal and Jeme Obeime each had 12 kills and Jadyn Yarling stared defensively with 19 digs. The result gave Brebeuf Jesuit a jump from No. 45 to No. 19 in this week's FAB 50 and dropped Yorktown from No. 10 down to No. 30.

Muncie Central captured the fifth state championship in school history by defeating Elkhart Memorial in straight sets. Jamie Drummer had 14 kills and Alyssa Sorrell had 10 kills to lead the way offensively after starter Marquita Marshall had to leave the title game early due to injury. The Bearcats moved up to No. 17 in this week's FAB 50 with the Chargers dropping just a few spots from No. 23 down to No. 34.

This week's major state finals also will be in the Midwest.

On Saturday at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, it could be a matchup of unbeatens in the Ohio Division I championship between FAB 50 No. 6 Ursuline Academy and FAB 50 No. 9 Dublin Coffman. Both of those teams need to win in semifinal matches on Thursday, however, to set up their showdown.

The Illinois state finals also are on Saturday at Redbird Arena in Normal. In Class 3A, FAB 50 No. 5 Joliet Catholic is favored and is going for its second straight state title. In Class 4A, FAB 50 No. 25 Lyons is the favorite but has not won a state crown since 1989.(Read full post)

(25-14, 25-18, 25-16), which knocked the Jags out of the top ten.  The Rockets went into the Louisville Invitational Tournament with one loss and emerged with one more to Sacred Heart (Louisville, Ky.) in a best of three match (25-21, 23-25, 25-18).

The season is heating up with early tournaments set for the coming weeks.  Competitive tournaments take place in Northern and Southern California.  No. 1 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) hosts its Invitational with 16 teams on four courts.  No. 21 Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Fla.) and No. 23 Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C.) will travel to the event, which includes top California talent.  Besides host Mitty, No. 13 Marymount, No. 20 Dos Pueblos (Goleta, Calif.) and No. 39 Santa Barbara will be in attendance.  In Southern California, the 32nd annual Dave Mohs, hosted by Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) 2009 First Girls' Volleyball Ranking -
Records and previous ranking from final 2008 FAB 50 Rankings

Last year, ESPN RISE crowned, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) High School the ESPN RISE National Champion.  The Monarchs picked up where they left off, atop the rankings as the pre-season No. 1, with nine seniors and six of seven starters who returned from the 2008 squad.  Head Coach Bret Almazan-Cezar prepares his veteran squad to achieve national excellence again this year.

Bret Almazan-Cezar coached Archbishop Mitty to a CIF State Div. II Championship.
"We're simply doing things that will continue the excellence and success of the past," said Almazan-Cezar.

Last year, Almazan-Cezar told ESPN RISE Volleyball, "This team really enjoys hanging out with each other."  To promote team unity this year, the team hiked 14 miles and camped in the Big Basin (Redwoods State Park, Calif.).

The Monarchs will host their own national tournament with Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Fla.) and Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C.) traveling from out of state to test the competition.

Tips for stat takers from the NCAA.org

If you only have one person to do your team's stats, have them sit next to the person doing the opposing team's stats – frequent checks are then possible to make sure that an attack is awarded a dig, an ace is awarded a reception error, etc.  Sitting on your team bench may be more familiar, but the purpose in being there to stat the match is to do the job correctly. The box score must balance at the end of the match, and it's a lot harder to go back afterward and try to make corrections.

  Lesli Akeo
  Leonard Xu/ESPN RISE
Lesli Akeo of Kamehameha (Honolulu, Hawai'i) controls the ball.
·  One team's blocks will also be reflected in the opponent's hitting errors
·  Aces must equal the opponent's serve reception errors
·  Don't give two players a reception error on the same serve. It must go to one person or the team
·  Digs cannot be more than the total attacks that did not go down for kills or errors.

Rarely do teams rank among the leaders in both blocks and digs. Either the team is blocking the ball down at the net for a point (and is awarded a block) or the team is digging up an attacked ball (for a dig).

Be aware that often coaches count many more blocks for their player performance purposes than are actual statistical blocks. A block MUST be off an attacked ball and MUST go down for a point. Using bench stats is very often not an accurate way to maintain volleyball stats.

To do a rough addition of how the box score will balance out, if Team A defeated Team B 25-21, 25-23, 25-20. Team A had 75 points, so you would add up Team A's kills, service aces, Team B's attack errors, service errors and ball handling errors and the numbers should be very close.

Team B finished with 64 points, and you'd add up their kills, service aces and to that total add in Team A's attack errors, service errors and ball handling errors. There are often a few points that don't go down on the box score – bad sets, miscommunication errors in which a player is not awarded an attack error when no one is there to hit the set, etc. but you CANNOT end up with more statistical points than a team finishes with on the scoring.

VIDEO: Get Recruited

July 3, 2009 10:00 AM

By Christine Jinbo

Many volleyball athletes, both boys and girls are competing at a national tournament at this very moment.  These athletes play for many reasons, one of which is to get recruited to play in college.

UC Irvine Mens Volleyball team recently bested USC in the NCAA Div. I National Championship in Provo, Utah. UCI Asst. Coach Mark Presho spoke with ESPN RISE Volleyball about building a national championship team and the type of athletes college coaches want to recruit.  He answered many common questions athletes have about the recruiting process.

Top ten tips

The Top Ten Tips about communicating with your child's coach effectively continues with the next three "rules.

Observing the communication between parents and coaches helps develop a young athlete's communication, cooperation and leadership skills.  It is important to realize how closely children watch adults talk and behave toward each other and they often mimic those behaviors. Therefore, you may want to reconsider saying something to your child's coach (or about your child's coach) that you would not want your child repeating.(Read full post)

Top Ten Tips
About communicating with your child's coach effectively

Parents often do not know the "rules" when approaching a coach to discuss their child and the team.  Rules of communication are often thrown out and emotions fuel a debate, especially when parents decide that the coach is coaching in an unsatisfactory way. You can help make the season better, as well as help your child enjoy their team experience more, by following a few simple rules:(Read full post)

The newest installment of the ESPN RISE FAB 50 has little movement as the volleyball season winds to a close.  Final rankings wait as California finishes its state playoffs this weekend.

In the CIF Division II race, No. 1 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) looks primed to take the CIF Northern Region State Championship for the seventh consecutive year.  The Central Coast Section proved to be the most dominant section in the Northern Region as Mitty matches up against a Central Coast Section

rival Mountain View.  The Monarchs bested Mountain View four times this season and look to make a clean sweep with this fifth and final match.

In the Southern Region, the Southern Section proved dominant. No. 19 Redlands East Valley (Redlands) faces the same opponent from the CIF Southern Section Div. II-AA finals, Corona del Mar (Newport Beach).  The Wildcats bested the Sea Kings, 25-16,25-20, 25-14 in that finals match up and Corona del Mar looks to even the score.

In the CIF Division I race, it is all about the Southern Region Finals.  Two Sectional Champions, No. 2 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) San Diego Section Champion and No. 7 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) Southern Section Champion face off in the final showdown.  The Mavericks travel to Santa Margarita and seek revenge on the only team to hand them a loss this season. Santa Margarita looks to defend itself at home and defeat La Costa Canyon for a second time this year.  The winner of this match will face Homestead (Cupertino) of the Central Coast Section or Napa of the San Joaquin Section.(Read full post)

ESPN RISE FAB 50 girls volleyball

November 12, 2008 8:00 PM

By Christine Jinbo

California:
The race in California has just begun as many other states moved on to their winter seasons. CIF Southern Section released its brackets in ten divisions on Sunday and ESPN RISE FAB 50 No. 7 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) received the top seed in Div. I-A.  No. 11 Wilson (Long Beach), No. 15 Santa Margarita, and No. 22 Los Alamitos followed behind in the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots.  The top four seeds of Div. I-A all went undefeated in their leagues with the exception of Santa Margarita, which split with No. 29 Orange Lutheran.

  Falyn Fonoimoana
  Leonard Xu/ESPN RISE
Can Falyn Fonoimoana take Costa to another CIF Title?
No. 19 Dos Pueblos (Goleta) swept the Channel League over rival Santa Barbara and received the top seed in Div. I-AA.  No. 39 Marymount (Los Angeles) and previously ranked No. 46 Santa Barbara will battle it out in the bottom half of the bracket.  No. 26 Redlands East Valley (Redlands) received the first seed in Div. II-AA
There were no surprises in the CIF Sections of San Diego or Central Coast.  No. 2 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) received the first seed in Div. I with Avocado League rival No. 43 Torrey Pines in the second seed.   The Central Coast Section seeded Archbishop Mitty first in Div. II.  The mighty Monarchs will not have much to overcome until state playoffs.

Colorado:
No. 20 Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.) picked up its fifth state championship in school history and its first in ten years. Coach Sally Moos' squad proved their dominance and defeated Grandview (Aurora) for the third time this year, 28-26, 25-11, 25-11, to win the Colorado 5A State final.

"It's been ten years since we last won state. Moos continued, "we are a senior laden team and these ten seniors have been looking forward to this season for a long time.

Moos elaborated, "They (the ten seniors) have played a huge role in the development of the team all season, which I think is why we have been successful,

The Colorado 5A All-Tournament Team selected three Cherry Creek players: setter- Gabi Dewberry, outside hitter- Carrie Baird and middle- Sam Peters.  Baird, a 6-foot-1 senior was chosen as the 5A state tournament MVP and paced the final match over Grandview with 15 kills.

Florida:
In the Sunshine State, the race is between three schools, which will not play each other. In the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championship, No. 37 Timber Creek (Orlando) could finish first in Div. 6A, No. 41 Plant (Tampa) first in 5A, and No. 40 Berkeley Prep (Tampa) first in 3A.  As it stands this season, Berkeley Prep defeated Plant and Timber Creek defeated Berkeley Prep.

Illinois:
The state race in the Land of Lincoln is down to the final four teams in each division.  In Class 4A, No. 16 Benet Academy (Lisle) will face No. 6 Mother McAuley (Chicago), which is on a twenty match win streak since its loss to No. 5 St. James (Lenexa, Kan.) at the NIKE Challenge in Chicago.

Benet's last loss was to No. 12 Joliet Catholic at the Glenbard East Tournament and it advanced past No. 42 Naperville Central in the Sectionals. After Joliet Catholic's regular season schedule, the final four of Class 3A should pose not threats.

No. 9 St. Charles East will face unranked Evanston Township before it will get the chance to confront either Benet or McAuley in the finals.

Indiana:
The Hoosier State since moved on to basketball season, but not before previously ranked No. 18 Indianapolis Cathedral came from behind in more ways than one.  Cathedral dropped the first set in the semifinals, but bounced back and took care of Elkhart Memorial, 24-26, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.  The Fighting Irish then dispatched Central in four sets, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 for the Class 4A Indiana State crown.

The Class 3A and 2A State Championships went forward without a glitch as No. 47 Delta defeated Mishawaka Marian in the Class 3A final, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 and Muncie Burris tapped Brownstown Central in the Class 2A final 25-16, 25-15, 25-20.

Kansas:
The Sunflower State was in full bloom as No. 5 St. James Academy (Lenexa) cruised to the Class 4A Kansas State title over Topeka-Hayden, 25-15, 25-12.  Coach Nancy Dorsey shaped this brand new program into a state and national contender in four short years.

The All Tournament Team from Class 6A, chosen by the Kansas Volleyball Association, selected: Alexa Bordewick, Kelsey Lewis, Shannon Majors and Kacia Turner from Washburn Rural.  Lauren Brown, Hanna Forst, Rachel Gray, Brook Jansen, Kelly Kolich, and Nia Williams were selected from St. James.

Kentucky:
No. 3 Mercy (Louisville) finished atop the Bluegrass State and went five for five over No. 18 Sacred Heart (Louisville), with the final win in the state finals, 25-20, 25-23.  The Jaguars most difficult test this season came from No. 32 Assumption, which was ranked as high as No. 6 after the Durango Classic (Las Vegas, Nev.), and the Jags came out on top three of four times.  Wins in Florida over No. 40 Berkley Prep (Tampa) and No. 41 Plant (Tampa) also proved the dominance of Mercy.

Kentucky State Championship All-Tournament Team:
Alex Schulte (Newport Central Catholic), Kaela Freppon (Newport Central Catholic), Jaimie Wulfeck (Notre Dame), Jenna Schreiver (Notre Dame), Connie Strong (Owensboro Catholic), Brooke Dowlen (Logan County), Kelly Cole (Paul Dunbar), Maddie Hatcher (Paul Dunbar), Danica Fick (Paul Dunbar), Abbi Williams (Sacred Heart), Emily Juhl (Sacred Heart), Lexi Bauer (Sacred Heart), Madison Hardy (Mercy), Kelsey Anderson (Mercy), Paige Wessel (Mercy)

Most Valuable Player:    Casey Garvey (Mercy)

No. 17 Papillion La Vista conquered the Metro Conference Tournament with a 3-0 victory over No. 33 Omaha Marian.  The Monarchs finished on top of the District A-1 over Omaha Northwest.  The Nebraska State Volleyball Tournament is November 13-15, and the Monarchs could face Omaha Marian for the sixth time this season or No. 28 Grand Island in the finals.

Ohio:
In the Division I Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Volleyball State Championship at Wright State University, it was the battle of the unbeaten teams.  Previously ranked No. 20 Olmsted Falls defeated No. 13 Cincinnati Ursuline Academy, 39-37, 16-25, 25-21, 25-12 and finished the season as the only undefeated team in all four divisions with a record of 29-0.

The 39-37 first game score was the highest in a state tournament championship match since Ohio went to the rally scoring format in 2004.  The previous high was 28-26, set on three different occasions.

Texas:
The Lone Star State shaped up to be just as exciting as expected.  Previously ranked No. 4 Reagan (San Antonio) eliminated District 26 rival No. 6 O'Connor (San Antonio) from the Texas State race.  The Rattlers will not have to worry about fellow San Antonio team previously ranked No. 11 Churchill, as the Chargers fell to previously unranked Austin Westlake.

No. 14 Amarillo advanced to Regional semifinals over Arlington Martin.  The Sandies could face No. 21 Clear Creek (Houston) in the final four of the State Qualifier Tournament.

Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) rose to the No. 1 spot in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 National Rankings this week, as La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) suffered a late season loss to previously ranked No. 42 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) in the finals of the Redondo Power Classic. The newly crowned No. 1 ascended to the top spot on their own accord, with their win loss record, with the help of a common opponent and the perfection ending loss by the Mavericks at the Redondo Tournament.

  Falyn Fonoimoana
  Leonard Xu/ESPN RISE
Joan Calpiaro sets the table for Mitty's stong attack.
Although La Costa Canyon owns an early season head to head victory over the Monarchs, Mitty has not dropped a match since then, building a in a 22-match win streak.  Coach Bret Almazan-Cezar's squad also clinched two tournament titles including the prestigious Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.  Both La Costa Canyon and Mitty faced Santa Margarita this season with opposite outcomes.  This loss for the Mavericks can do two things, re-kindle the flame and spur them on to a state title or be a sign of the bottom falling out at the end of a long season.

What this means for playoffs, we may never know since La Costa Canyon and Archbishop Mitty are in different CIF divisions.

Santa Margarita, depending on the day of the week and its injured reserve, packed a punch felt by two previously ranked No. 1 teams. The Eagles jumped into the top 25 this week with their latest David and Goliath feat.

En route to their upset of La Costa Canyon (25-21, 15-25, 25-21), the Eagles defeated Thousand Oaks 25-23, 25-21,17-25, 22-25, 15-7, in the semi finals of the Redondo Tournament. Kylie Hargreaves was selected tournament MVP and Natalie Hamill and Kenna Crouse were named to the all-tournament team.

Elsewhere in the nation, state races are in various conditions of completion.  In the Lone Star State, teams competed in Bidistricts November 3-4. Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Tournament began with Bidistricts, continues to the Area tournament November 6-8, then the Regional Tournament commences 10-11, with the state finals wrapping up on November 15.

No. 14 Amarillo sits alone in Region 1 and could face No. 21 Clear Creek (League City) of Region 3, as neither faces other FAB 50 competition in their regions.  No. 25 Lake Highlands (Dallas) is in Region 2 and may face Round Rock in the Region Finals. San Antonio teams No. 6 O'Connor, No. 4 Reagan and No. 11 Churchill overload Region 4.  O'Connor and Reagan could meet in the Regional Semifinals, while Churchill will most likely face Westlake (Austin) before facing either O'Connor or Reagan in the Regional Finals.

In the Land of Lincoln, Naperville Central defeated Naperville North in sectionals, 22-25, 25-18, 25-14 and will face Benet Academy (Lisle) in the Downers Grove Sectional Final.  Mother McAuley performed well in its state quest and defeated Sandburg (Orland Park) 25-11. 25-20.  The Mighty Macs will square off against Marist (Chicago) in the Tinley Park Sectional Final.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association plays its state finals this weekend November 8.  No. 10 Muncie Central faces Floyd Central in the semifinals and No. 30 Elkhart Memorial will face No. 18 Indianapolis Cathedral in the other semi.  The winners of each face off at Ball State University for the Hoosier State title.

It could be the battle of the unbeatens in the Sooner State.  No. 20 Olmsted Falls (27-0) must get past Broadview Heights (Brecksville) and No. 13 Ursuline Academy (Cincinnati) (27-0) must down cross-town rival No. 33 Mount Notre Dame to advance to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Championship (OHSAA).

The ESPN RISE FAB 50 teams jostled in the rankings with the conclusion of the Nike Challenge in Chicago, Ill.  This national tournament exposed teams' weaknesses and revealed other teams' resolve.  Plant (Tampa, Fla.) fell far in the rankings as they sustained losses to Sacred Heart (Louisville, Kent.) and Downers Grove South (Ill.) after last week's losses to Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Fla.) and Mercy (Louisville, Kent.). The Panthers placed fifth at the Nike Challenge as they missed the dominant play of the partially healthy outside hitter Maddie Martin (Penn State), who played sparingly (and not full speed) with an injured ankle.(Read full post)

ESPN RISE Girls Volleyball National FAB 50 for games through the week of September 29, 2008.  Previous rank in parenthesis.

If it could happen to USC football, it could happen to any team.  Upsets happened around the nation and No. 2 Plant (Tampa, Fla.) fell victim along with No. 6 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.), No. 12 Muncie Central (Muncie, Ind.).   Plant (Tampa, Fla.) fell to No. 45 Berkley Prep (Tampa, Fla.) at the Berkeley Premier Invitational  (Tampa, Fla.), 25-23, 16-25, 25-18, 21-25, 10-15.  After the grueling five game loss, the squad met up with No. 8 Mercy (Louisville, Kent.) in the quarterfinals of the tournament and lost, 25-19, 25-20, 25-12. Coach Leanna Taylor's squad played without standout Penn State commit Maddie Martin and hope to have her back in time to redeem themselves at the NIKE Challenge this weekend in Chicago, Ill.
