Fall or spring: A coach's perspective

October 7, 2009 5:05 PM

The following is from the head coach of the Tennessee Fury 18U Gold, Jeremy Higdon. He and his wife, Jill, coach one of the premier club teams in the country. Below is his perspective on the fall versus spring debate.

Jill and I live in Tennessee and coach Ga. and Tenn. kids, have been to the last five Tenn. State Championship Tournaments as spectators, and also coached high school ball in Ga. for five years, winning a State Championship in 2004.

This depends on the weather in your state. It's one thing to play early-season, relatively meaningless, games in March when the weather can be pretty chilly and "not softball weather". It's entirely another to play the most meaningful games of your season, the postseason, in October or November, where in a majority of US states there is the real possibility of playing a game in the 30s or 40s.

The Georgia High School State Championship is played the last or next to last weekend in October in Columbus, Ga. (in the southern part of Ga.). The climate in Columbus is very mild and is not yet cold in October.

The Tennessee High School State Championship is played the last weekend in May in Murfreesboro where, depending on the year, you might get pleasant or balmy weather.

If Tennessee played in the Fall, they would play the last weekend in October. There is an exposure tournament hosted the last weekend of October in Murfreesboro every year. The last time our team played in that tournament, it was 31 degrees for an 8:30 AM game.

Is that a big deal for an exposure tournament? Not really.

Is it a big deal to play a State Championship game in that type weather when your pitchers can't feel their fingers and bats need to be kept warm?

Attendance by College Coaches at high school games has nothing to do with the time of year.
It's a good thought, but I think the wrong direction for most states.

What do you think? Emai: Garland@studentsports.com with your opinion!

Fury Coach Pat Moyer on Jackie
"One thing about Jackie, we allow her to call her own pitches, because she's so in tune with what we're trying to do,” Moyer said. "Jackie's mature enough that we trust her back there, and no matter how big the situation is, we don't have any insecurities about it.”

"With her at leadoff we won four of five games,” Moyer said. "Her first game she was 3-for-3. Her second game she was 4-for-5. She was stealing bases and making plays. She's just a kid that has no weaknessess in her game defensively and offensively.”

Four Calif. athletes make it official

November 18, 2008 12:48 PM

By Garland Cooper

Monday morning, at Hart High School in Newhall, Calif., four elite softball players signed their National Letters of Intent to play D-I ball.

The athletes included Jessica Shults (Okla.), Destiny Rodino (UCLA), Emily Henry (Chico State), and Melissa Brown (Tenn.). All four are starters for the Hart High School squad; Shults and Rodino make up the battery for the Indians while Henry and Brown round out the infield.

Signing their National Letters of Intent sealed the deal for the athletes and it seemed to put everything in perspective.

 ESPN RISE
(L-R:) Emily Henry, Destiny Rodino, Jessica Shults, and Melissa Brown.
"It is unreal," stated Rodino at the signing ceremony, "Everything that we have worked for has finally paid off. All the hours spent practicing and the missed events finally have paid off. It is such a blessing!"

Rodino chose UCLA over a plethora of schools including LSU, Wisconsin, Florida, and Cal State Fullerton. She wasn't the only one with schools breaking down her door, all three of the girls had to turn away several prospects. Shults turned down UCLA, Washington, Texas and Oregon State, Brown turned down Cal State Fullerton and Washington and Henry said goodbye to Farleigh Dickinson.

With so many offers, it must have been a difficult decision for the girls, but each of them were able to give several reasons explaining why their school was the right fit for them.

"I liked the small-town atmosphere, the girls and the coaches; it just felt like a good fit," Henry stated, remembering her time at Chico State.

Shults decided on Oklahoma after visiting the campus. "I just felt really welcome there, and it felt like they really wanted me to play for them."

Brown, like Henry and Shults, also based her decision on feeling when visiting Tennessee. "I saw the way they treated athletes and students and I wanted to be a part of it. I knew the second I got there that Tennessee was the place for me."

Finally, Rodino, who lives not far from the UCLA campus, saw the appeal in being close to home. "Being in Southern Calif. my parents will be able to come to the games," she stated. However, the bigger reason laid in UCLA's history. "I want to be a part of the legacy that comes with being a softball player at UCLA."

They each have their reasons for choosing their collegiate programs, but they all agree that the focus is different now since the dream of playing in college has become a reality.

"My focus now is just preparing for college and working to be the best I can be," said Shults.

The other girls agreed that preparing was most important, but Rodino was quick to add that, while they would be starting a collegiate career next fall, this year is not over. "I want to win! I want a ring before I leave!" Rodino added enthusiastically.

With these four seniors, a ring at the end of the year is not completely unrealistic for the Hart High School Indians.

On the mound, Rodino held opponents to only 11 earned runs and had an ERA of 0.405 last season. Shults, Brown, and Henry led the offensive push for the Indians with Shults and Brown batting well over .400. Shults also hit ten homers and had 31 RBI while Brown led the team with 13 stolen bases. Henry scored 13 runs and played in every game for the Indians while leading defensively.

Look for these four Indians and the whole Hart squad tearing up the field come spring. As Rodino stated, these girls have some unfinished business to take care of before they leave their high school careers behind.

Player to watch and updates

September 12, 2008 3:59 AM

By Garland Cooper

Player to watch: Beverly Weaver

 COURTESY OF COACH BILL DRYDEN
 Beverly Weaver
Beverly Weaver, a sophomore left-hander at Pocomoke High School in Pocomoke, Md., became the freshman starter for the Warriors last spring and led the team to the Regional Finals. It was quite a feat since the girls at Pocomoke had never made it to that level of competition in previous years.

This fall she has taken her pitching talents to the Virginia Stars ASA Gold team. Weaver and her family sacrifice a lot for her exposure driving three hours one-way to practice with the Stars.

Weaver throws in the low 60's keeping batters off-balance with a killer rise, drop, drop/curve and change.

She is as good in the classroom as she is on the field, finishing her freshman year ranked number one in her class. With talent at such a young age, and the training she is beginning to undergo, She is beginning to strength train and will only get better and stronger.

Weaver also was a starter for the High School Field Hockey team and helped them to a 1A Maryland State Championship.

2009 Graduate Updates

Stephanie Speierman, who has verbally committed to Michigan, has been clocked at 69 mph and regularly throws at 66 mph.  The future Wolverine continues to work hard and shows her dedication flying from Md. to the West Coast to play for the San Diego Renegades in an effort to become a better pitcher and prepare for college ball.

Lauren Gibson, who pitches for Chesapeake High School in Md. and is two-time Baltimore Sun Metro Player of the Year, has verbally committed to Tennessee as an infielder. She continues to work hard, looking forward to the upcoming high school and club seasons that will prepare her to play at the next level.

High School News

Unfortunately, last week Oklahoma was hit by some bad weather and therefore most of their high school games were postponned or cancelled. More to come from the  Sooner State in the upcoming week!
