Lauren Lappin: Headed for Beijing

July 29, 2008 9:41 PM

By: Garland Cooper

We were fortunate enough to catch Lauren Lappin of the USA Team just a week before she left for Beijing to get some final thoughts.

Lappin was a Pan American Gold Medalist in 2007 and a World Cup Champion the same year. She was also an alternate on the 2004 Gold Medal squad.

At Stanford she was an All-American and was the two-time Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year.

*****

Q: What are the main focuses of the team as you get closer to the Olympic Games?
A: Well, we only have three games left so we really want to take advantage of those and go into each game as if it were a big game. Sometimes it is hard to not get complacent and to really put it in Olympic mode and put pressure on ourselves as though we were in those big situations. With the conclusion of our tour, we are really focusing on making sure we are where we need to be emotionally and physically.

Q: What is the feel/attitude of the team?
A: Everyone is really positive and we all are trying to be our own best friends and go into the Games knowing that we have put in all the preparation that is necessary. We are having a lot of fun but we are definitely prepared for a fight and we realize the world is catching up and has elevated their game. We are all still very confident and look forward to getting to Beijing.

Q: What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome?
A: We have had a bunch of little obstacles. The tour is tons of fun but with all the traveling, hard practices, and the games we play it can be exhausting. It has been a grind and a tough transition. It's not an easy road to figuring out what we have to do to get where we need to be.

Q: I can think of a couple of obstacles you faced this year. How about when you got no-hit at Virginia Tech, what happened?
A: Well it was USA's first lost ever in exhibition play. It was very humbling but it was good timing and came when we needed it. We definitely took it in stride and didn't let it effect us too much, but we still were able to learn from it. We realized that we were not ready for what we are trying to accomplish; not even close. We were able to bounce back and reevaluate where we were and needed to be.

Q: How about when Lisa Fernandez was named an alternate to the team after being so instrumental in USA's success in the past?
A: Like most of the softball world we were shocked. She definitely is the most mentally tough player to play the game and she fires people up. The committee made a decision and it was maybe the toughest decision they have ever had to make. It has been a tough transition  but we have gotten through it. It is what it is and we have 15 girls that are really amazing, but it is hard not to see her being there. She has put so much into the program; she really will be there in spirit. We all have so much respect for her and what she has done for the game, for the team, and for each of us individually and we will take all of that with us

Q: Personally, what are you working on?
A: I'm just getting ready mentally and physically for what lies ahead. It's about knowing that I have put all the work in and I will be prepared for whatever role I will have in Beijing. I also have to know what kind of player I am. I'm not a power hitter, so I will just be prepared to do whatever I can for the team. Maybe that means slapping from the left or hitting from the right, but whatever my role is I will be prepared for it.

Q: What are the workouts and practices like right now so close to the Games?
A: Really right now it is just about sharpening up and making sure that we are putting in the work fundamentally. We take a lot of cuts and we break everything down and hone in on the simple things that make up the game. We work on not letting the game get too fast and remembering that it is still the same game regardless if it is on the Olympic stage or not.

Q: Who do you think will be your biggest competition?
A: Japan has a good team and Canada, China and Australia all are right there too. It will be interesting to see who is on the podium. We definitely aren't taking anyone lightly. We have a game plan for every pitcher that we could potentially face at the Games and we will be prepared for whoever they throw at us. Right now we are focusing on these last couple of weeks in order to be prepared when we get there.

Q: What do you think about the Olympics being voted out of the Olympics?
A: Obviously we were devastated. It wasn't just devastating for us, we are lucky to be able to go this year; it is devastating for all the younger girls. It breaks my heart everyday when I sign autographs to hear how those girls are so upset about it, it just breaks all of our hearts. It is sad to think it might not be back, but I am optimistic. The game is growing so fast and there are some great people fighting for it and doing a lot of different things to get it back. Until then we will take advantage of everyday we have. I can't describe a better feeling than putting on that USA uniform and playing with veterans that I idolized when I was younger and I just hope that the younger girls today will have that opportunity as well.

Q: What do you think the chances are that softball will be reinstated?
A: We hear different things so it is hard to say. You just never know what is going to happen when that committee gets in that room to cast their votes. I'm an optimistic person and I have faith in the people at the head of the battle.

Q: How has that affected your present campaign? Are emotions high, do you feel that you have something to prove?
A: It is on our minds and in our hearts. We get asked about it all the time and everyone has different opinions. Right now we are trying to show people how great the game is and how fast it is growing. We are doing everything we can to get it on the map in a strong and positive way. Again, I'm just trying to take advantage of everyday on the USA Team, this may be my first and my last.

Q: Does USA softball have any concerns sending you all to Beijing with the current political situation?
A: Not really. We are really well taken care of as athletes; I'm actually more worried about my family coming! Of course we are aware of the situation out there and we will be very careful in how we approach certain questions or situations we are confronted with.

Q: This is your first time at the Olympics, what emotions have you gone through preparing for these Games?
A: Like many young girls, this has always been my dream. Once I saw that it was a possibility I worked, despite many letdowns along the way, and I eventually got here. I had some tough summers but I kept proving myself and developing myself as a player, learning to play different positions and doing different things to make myself a valuable member of the team. It has been great to play with the more experienced women who know how to function with softball as their job; it is a different approach.
There has been a lot of preparation, focusing, and goals. I have been able to find what I do best and have confidence in that. I try and give as much energy as I can to the team and always have a smile on my face. It is such a great realization when you discover that you no longer are just playing for yourself, your parents, your coaches, or even your team, it is so much bigger than that. It is for all of those things but also for your sport and your whole country.

Stars continue to rise

July 26, 2008 11:50 PM

By: Kynon Codrington

Last weekend the Ft. Lauderdale-area played host to the Rising Stars Summer Showcase, which featured some of top players from the mid-Atlantic down to the southeast.

The event featured a recruiting camp, round robin exhibition play, practice simulation, a vendor tradeshow, and SPARQ testing. It was a busy weekend for future stars looking to get noticed by college recruiters. The tournament also provides some of the younger prospects a platform to gain valuable experience against top-level competition.

Rising Stars, SPARQ Training, and Nike teamed up to allow teams and individual players a chance to compete for top SPARQ Rating honors.

One of the top SPARQ rated athletes from the Janurary Winter Showcase, Melissa Lewis, came back to test and did not dissapoint. An outfielder from HHH High School West in Dix Hills, N.Y., Lewis is a quick-twitch athlete that displayed ultra-fast lateral quickness, good agility, top-end linear speed, and dynamic explosiveness.

When asked about her off-season training Lewis said, "I train with my team, in addition to running track and playing volleyball. I do a lot of side-to-side and shuffle work and sit-ups to keep my core strong. On the recruiting front the junior-to-be is receiving mail from programs such as Florida State and Emory University.

One player in particular looking to impress the coaches from UNF was a senior-to-be first baseman Courtney Sadler from Bayshore High School in Bradenton, Fla.

"I'm hoping to have a good tournament because I'm getting interest from UNF and Palm Beach Atlantic University. She continues "I have been working out lifting weights, doing box work, and running at 5 Tools Baseball and Softball.

With Sadler's committed off-season training and work ethic it looks like she will be receiving that coveted first offer soon!

College coaches and recruiters from the University of South Florida (USF), College of Charleston, University of North Florida (UNF), Flagler College, and Rollins College were a few of the schools on hand scouting the talent.

Step versus Leap: The proper pitching stride

July 25, 2008 1:00 PM

By: Amanda Freed

The best part about my job as a coach and player is I am constantly learning. I believe taking in information from multiple sources can only be beneficial. Some of these sources you agree with and others you may not, but if you close your mind to the opinions of others, you'll never grow. This goes for all aspects of life.

I was browsing the Internet this afternoon and I came across a softball discussion forum. A pitching coach was asking for other opinions on the proper pitching stride, "stepping method, or leap and drag?

First of all, what do either of those mean? There is no concrete "How To of either technique so they are open to interpretation. I would never encourage my students to "leap and drag, at least not using that terminology.

I generally tell my students to elongate their step until it feels comfortable and eventually it will turn into a driving stride towards the plate. I would also never encourage my students to step really high, using a slow motion at first and speeding up their arm once their body comes down from the high step.

The first response on the discussion board to the coach's fairly lengthy question was, "How do you see most of the elite pitchers pitching?

How would such a matter-of-fact answer solve this problem? Okay, good point, but bad delivery!

I agree with the point the responder is trying to make, it's the same with the whole theory behind throwing your hips closed before delivery. Do you see the best pitchers in the world throwing their hips forward? Absolutely not. However, simply watching the most talented pitchers is not enough to educate you on how to pitch and how not to pitch.

If you do not understand why you are pitching a certain way then it'll never make sense. Not only will it be extremely difficult to master, you'll have an even harder time articulating it to others. This is why I tell you repeatedly how important it is to ask questions and get answers until you get it.

Now back to the question: Stepping Method vs. Leap and Drag? Well, the coach from the discussion above mentioned that one of the reasons he is an advocate of the Stepping Method is because he saw a guy, "&Pitch a laser across almost the entire length of a gym floor with a casual leg motion that was more of an up-down rhythm and snap.

You are going to get the best effort out of your body by using it in it's natural sequence and rhythm. The better the timing and sequence of your body towards the plate, the quicker and more efficient the pitch. There is no definitive height or length of the stride; everyone is different. It is important to gather as much information as possible in order to figure out what is the best solution for you. The discussion seemed to be a little touchy, and I thought about jumping in and putting in my two cents but resisted the temptation. Now it's something for you all to think about and possibly discuss.

On a lighter, yet not so light note, I am sitting here in Chicago with a partially torn tendon in my left thumb. We were playing a television game against the second place team in the league and were ahead, but struggling in the top of the 7th inning.

I went all out diving for a foul ball in left field and must have tweaked my thumb enough to tear the tendon. The MRI first thing the following morning confirmed the tear. I hate being injured!! I am rarely injured enough to sit out a game let alone having 3 weeks of nothing!

I replayed the situation in my head over and over again. Was it worth it? It was foul, I barely missed it, and in the end, the other team came from behind to beat us. Push come to shove, you can never play scared you're going to lose or get hurt because you just never know which way the ball will bounce, metaphorically. This was a freak-accident that I probably avoided 99 out of 100 other times. My first day back on the field, given the chance, I'd do it all over again.

So, my team is traveling on a road trip and I am here for eight days by myself. During this time I intend to make sure the rest of my body remains in good shape so I can return as quickly as possible, but more importantly I am going to convert one of my teammate's dorm room into a beautiful pink palace by lining the cabinets with pink paper, replacing the dishes with pink plastic-ware, dying her milk and eggs pink, and accessorizing the room with anything pink I can find including picture frames, blankets and candles& just to name a few ideas. It's always important to keep life light&Shhhh, it's still a secret!

Top Testers Surf City Summer Showcase, Calif.

July 24, 2008 5:49 PM

A number of softball athletes were SPARQ Tested last weekend at the Surf City Summer Showcase in Huntington Beach, Calif.

SPARQ Testing consists of four tests: 20-yard Sprint, Vertical Jump, Rotational Powerball Throw, and Agility Shuttle. Once the athletes have gone through all four tests they receive an overall SPARQ Rating which is a measure of their athleticism as a softball player.

This is a useful tool that allows athletes to see what their strengths and weaknesses are so that they can train to better themselves as softball players.

Below are the top testers in each category from the Surf City Summer Showcase.

Q&A with Javen Henson

July 23, 2008 3:28 PM

We had the opportunity to sit down with one of Oklahoma's finest, Javen Henson, to talk about softball this year, committing to her dream school and life in general.

The 2010 shortstop/utility player lead her school to back-to-back State Titles in 2006 and 2007. In this year's state final she was intentionally walked five times throughout the course of the 11-inning game.

In the 20 games in her high school season Henson batted .525 with a slugging percentage of .850.

This year she was selected as a member of the 2008 ESPN/Under Armour All-American High School Softball Game that took place last weekend.

*****

Q: How did your high school and club seasons go this year?
A: They both went really well. I won state for the second consecutive year with my high school team and we have been very successful this year with my club team too.

Q: What were the details around your committing to Oklahoma?
A: On the last day of camp there this summer I went to shake Coach Gasso's hand and tell her thank you and she asked me how close I was to knowing where I wanted to go to college. I told her I thought I was pretty close. Then she asked if Oklahoma was one of the schools that I was considering and I said definitely. That's when she offered me. I was so shocked that I was pretty quiet for the rest of our conversation, but when I walked over to my grandparents I started bawling as I was telling them that she had just offered me! Not even two weeks later I called her and committed.

Q: What were the factors in determining that Oklahoma was the right fit for you?
A: Well I grew up being a die-hard OU fan. My Granmom and Grangran are huge OU fans and they've had season football tickets since way before I was born. It's the only place I've ever known when it comes to college anything. It wouldn't have even felt right looking at any other schools. I've always known that I wanted to go there. It's in my blood.

Q: How did OU first learn about you and eventually offer?
A: I attended OU's advanced camp the summer between my Freshman and Sophomore year. That's where it all started I think. Then, my sophomore year I played in the OU Worth High School Invitational. After that they just started watching me wherever I played.

Q: What do you like most about your club team the Tulsa Elite Easton Gold?
A: I love everything about my team, but I would definitely have to say my coaches. They do everything in their power to get everyone seen by college coaches and get them recruited.

Q: Who has been most supportive of your dream to play College Softball?
A: My mom. She has spent so much time and money taking me to play softball my entire life. If she hadn't done that I would never be where I am today.

Q: What's been your best or most exciting experience on the field?
A: Last year in our state finals we were winning 7-0 against Sentinel in the last inning. We were all excited and thinking that we were fixing to win easy for the second straight year. That ended up not being the case. It started pouring and Sentinel got a rally going. They scored four runs and we still needed one out. It was so wet and slippery our pitcher could barely stand up, much less pitch.

I remember our coach only calling fastballs just so Cayce could maybe get it across the plate. That's when I knew it wasn't going to be as easy as we had all thought. Finally they delayed the game for a few hours, but it just kept raining and they couldn't get the field ready. We ended up not playing for 72 hours! When we finally came back to play they tied us and we went into extra innings. Finally, in the 11th inning we got a runner on third and they were trying to intentionally walk me and the pitcher threw a wild pitch scoring our winning run. It was by far the best and most exciting experience that I've had on the field so far.

Q: What has been your most rewarding experience off the field?
A: I would definitely have to say getting valedictorian of my 8th grade class. It was nice to know that all my hard work in school had finally paid off. Hopefully it will pay off again my senior year.

Q: What has been the biggest obstacle for you to overcome as a player?
A: I'm not the fastest person in the world so I have to really work hard to maintain a decent speed. I have to really concentrate on how quick my first step is.

Q: What's been your most embarrassing moment on the softball field?
A: That's an easy one! In the state tournament this past year I celebrated our championship by throwing up my glove and running toward our pitcher... with only 2 outs!

Q: What would you like to be doing in ten years?
A: I'm not sure yet, but right now I'm thinking that I would like to be a Sports Therapist.

Now we will start the sentence and you fill in the blanks:

If I could only have one material possession on a deserted island it'd be... My phone! Definitely!
Food I could eat all day... Chicken strips
You couldn't pay me enough to eat... Frog legs
The best movie ever would be... Love and Basketball
Worst movie ever... From Justin to Kelly
The hardest I ever laugh is when... I'm with my friends.
The happiest I've ever been was... The day Coach Gasso offered me. I also got a phone call saying that I would be playing in the 2008 Under Armour All-American game in Florida.
The topical issue in the world that most interests me is... The Presidential Election
The best thing about softball is... Knowing that nothing else in the world matters once you step on that field.

Firecrackers end with a bang

July 22, 2008 2:51 PM

The Firecrackers lit up the sky with every blast of the bat on Saturday night.

Although the Firecrackers came out on top, it was made clear early in the game that neither team would go down without a fight.

The Firecrackers plated two quick runs in the first inning to go ahead until the third when the Cruisers answered back with three runs to take the lead.

The Cruiser's lead, however, was short-lived. In the bottom of the same inning the Firecrackers brought home two runners to go ahead for the second time in the game.

The game continued back and forth and in the fifth the Cruisers took advantage of a rattled Firecrackers defense and scored an unearned run to tie it up.

The game was tied at four in the fifth. With no action in the sixth, the two teams buckled down to win it in the final inning.

The Cruiser's came up big with four runs in the top of the seventh. Courtney Craig launched a double to right field scoring Michelle Takeda who led off with a hit. Samantha Dodd beat out a bunt to first and scored later in the inning on a ball in the dirt that got away from catcher, Jessica Shults. Justeen Maeva recorded two RBI later in the inning putting her at three RBI on the night.

After the top of the seventh, the game was all but over. Three base hits in a row from Hallie Wilson, Jamia Reid and Ashley Hansen loaded up the bases with no outs. They gave up an out for a run when Kristen Arriola grounded to second base, but there were still runners in scoring position waiting for cleanup Perilini Koria.

Koria did her job blasting a double into deep right field plating two and Shults followed up behind her with a base hit. The pinch runner for Koria on second advanced on the base hit but made it home when the centerfielder for the Cruiser's overthrew the ball to the plate.

The Firecrackers scored the four runs they needed to tie it up but were unable to push another run across to win it in the seventh. The game went into international tiebreaker with the Cruisers up to bat.

The Cruisers got their runner to third, giving up an out, and she then made it across the plate when another ball got away from Shults behind the plate.

The Cruisers went ahead for the last time of the night; the determined Firecrackers squad was up again and was not going to give in.

They also successfully moved their runner to third and Reid stepped up to the plate. She had reached on base hits in every at bat and this one would be no exception.

She chopped the ball through the infield to score the runner on third. Once she got to first, the speedster stole second safely and Hansen hit a laser off the third baseman's leg to put Reid on third.

Again, up comes the big bat, Koria, to clean house, only this time the Cruisers had a plan. The catcher stood up planning to intentionally walk the Arizona-bound bomber but it turns out, their efforts were in vain.

Koria watched the first two pitches go by, but when the third pitch came just a little too close to the zone, Koria poked a line drive over the head of the first baseman! They had meant to give her a free base, but that wasn't good enough; she wanted the win.

The Firecrackers had won the eight-inning battle, but Head Coach Tony Rico knew they had played some tough competition.

"It was a great final game to be a part of," he states, "It came down to two good teams going toe to toe and it just happened to go our way."

Right he was. Both teams had been ahead throughout the course of the game and both had players come through in the clutch, but no one came through like Koria did for the Firecrackers.

"(Peri)Lini Koria came up big for us tonight. She was the biggest bat of the game, first with her double that scored two and then her base hit in the end to win it.

The Firecrackers have now won the last two tournaments they have entered and have faced some tough competition.

In two weeks they will play their last tournament of the season: ASA Nationals. Can they take a third championship in a row and defend their 2007 National Title? If they keep their bats hot and play sound defense, I wouldn't count them out.

Winning Pitcher: Allee Allen
Losing Pticher: Lindsey Sisk

Jamia Reid - 4 for 4
Ashley Hansen - 4 for 4
Perilini Koria - 4 RBI

Justeen Maeva - reached 3 times, 2 hits, 1 BB 3 RBI

USA Softball's Last Stop

July 19, 2008 10:19 PM

Colonel Bill Barber Park, Deanna Manning Stadium

Irive, Calif.,  July 26, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Oklahoma City, Okla. -The 2008 USA Softball Women's National Team vs Team Intensity will be in Irvine, CA at Colonel Bill Barber's Deanna Manning Stadium on July 26th for a 7:30 game as the 'Bound 4 Beijing' tour rolls through the United States in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.  Irvine is the last stop of 46 cities on the tour that will host the Red, White and Blue as they look to capture a fourth-consecutive gold medal in China.

"The Amateur Softball Association is proud to be able to organize the Bound 4 Beijing tour for the National Team as well as for the softball enthusiasts across the U.S., said ASA Executive Director Ron Radigonda. "It's going to be an exciting year for our women's program as they look to a fourth-consecutive gold medal and what better way to get it started than with a tour across the United States. Our local associations have done a great job in hosting these stops, providing the opportunity for our team to compete against the best teams in the country on American soil.

The 2008 Women's National Team, who will travel to Beijing in August, will make 46 stops across the country competing in over 60 games. The team will compete against NCAA Division I opponents, Regional All-Star teams as well as international competition.

"We're excited to be able to travel across the country and showcase our talented team and hopefully get everyone excited for the Olympic Games, said Cat Osterman, who will be making her second tour. "Some of the most talented softball players of the world are in the United States so it will be good to get out there and face some of the top athletes in the sport. It's a great way to prepare for the ultimate stage, the Olympic Games.

Highlighting the tour will be eight nationally televised games on ESPN2 airing April through June.   Also slated are four other games for July rounding out over 20 hours of softball programming on the ESPN family of networks.

"The Bound 4 Beijing tour is great exposure for not only the team, but also for the sport of softball, says head Coach Mike Candrea.  "It provides us an opportunity to play in front of fans that may not otherwise have the chance to see us compete.  It's a long haul as we will play six months of competitive softball, but in the end it will help us prepare for our ultimate goal, a fourth-consecutive gold medal.
