The big winner this week was Jesuit (Ore.), which avenged its only loss with a 5-1 victory over Westview (Ore.) in a meeting between the two top-ranked teams in Oregon. Girls state-by-state rankings - Fall October 13, 2009 2:09 AM By Sheldon Shealer, editor The race for No. 1 in Ohio is heating up and it appears any of the current ESPN RISE state-by-state Top 7 teams in the state could very well walk away with the Division 1 title. The top four teams -- Strongsville, St. Ursula, Walsh Jesuit and Medina -- remain the frontrunners. This week, Walsh Jesuit and St. Ursula swap spots to move Walsh Jesuit next to Medina, the team it tied last week. In the most bizarre result of the week, a contest between Villa Joseph Marie (Pa.) and Strath Haven (Pa.) was halted while tied 1-1 late in the first half. VJM pulled its players from the field when there was no trainer to tend to an injured player, according to published reports. The reports indicated VJM coach Rick Finneyfrock thought it was a state rule that the home team -- in this case Strath Haven -- must have a trainer present for the match, thus he refused to continue the match. It was later learned that having a trainer present is merely strongly encouraged, but not a state rule. VJM could be required to forfeit the match, but it was unclear if Strath Haven would pursue such an avenue. Finneyfrock said he is willing to replay the match or pick it up from where it was halted. For the time being, ESPN RISE is listing the match as a draw, although that will change depending on what the schools decide to do with the contest. If the match is not continued or replayed, the most likely outcome would be striking the result from the record, unless VJM is required to forfeit. That result helped complete the connection of top teams in the following states -- Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Although this was Downingtown West's only non-Pennsylvania opponent, Pennington has played teams from Maryland and Kentucky, and those teams have competed against ranked teams in the other states. Girls state-by-state rankings - Fall September 22, 2009 12:41 AM By Sheldon Shealer, editor Here's a fun fact ... 23 states offer boys and girls soccer in the fall. Four of those states -- Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Rhode Island hold the distinction of being the only states where the No. 1 spot is held by the boys' and girls' programs at the same school. LaSalle Academy (R.I.) has been No. 1 in Rhode Island boys and girls since the preseason. The other three schools to join this elite group came to its current ranking this week. In New Hampshire, Manchester Central girls held the top spot but the school's boys' team won a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up to elevate it to the top. In Maine, a loss by defending champ Waterville allowed Scarborough girls to inherit the No. 1 ranking, which the school's boys' team already held. In New Mexico,two losses by Las Cruces boys' team allowed Sandia to move up in the rankings. The first step in setting up the fall FAB 50 girls' soccer rankings is establishing the state-by-state rankings. With the assistance of coaches from around the country, we release the state rankings in preparation for Thursday's preseason FAB 50.
The rankings are based largely on the quality of returning players, strength of schedule and reasonable expectations from these programs.
Many familiar names grace the list, but here's a quick glance at some of the key states and the preseason debates that were raised:
New Jersey: Pennington and Immaculate Heart play each other during the regular season, therefore, the state's No. 1 ranking might be settled on the field. Lenape, with the state's longest win streak, is in position to inherit No. 1 if the top two falter. Washington Township is a highly ranked wild card. The school has more Division I commitments than any other New Jersey school. The issue remains will these players represent the high school?
New York: There is no clear favorite in New York this year. South Side gets the edge since six returning players received some postseason honor last season and Crystal Dunn returns to the team after playing for the U.S. in last year's Under-17 World Championship. Beyond South Side, there is no New York Class AA and A program with more than one returning all-state player. The preseason No. 1 South Side and No. 2 St. Anthony's were not FAB 50 teams last year. New York, with more than 700 girls' soccer-playing schools, is bound to offer a few surprises as the season unfolds.
Ohio: Four teams stand out in Ohio led by two-time defending champ St. Ursula. Medina and Strongsville will settle the issue on the field and Upper Arlington poses a threat again this year.
Pennsylvania: On paper, Downingtown West is the clear favorite, but beyond that it is quite the scramble in what will be the final split-season for Pennsylvania girls' soccer. Starting next year, the state's nearly 200 spring-playing schools will move to the fall season.
