Boys state-by-state rankings - Fall

October 13, 2009 1:48 AM

By Sheldon Shealer, editor

Pennsbury (Pa.) exacted a measure of revenge by defeating Council Rock North (Pa.) in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle in Pennsylvania.

Council Rock North had won the first meeting.

Pennsbury's victory vaults this District 1 team back to No. 1 in the state, where it started the season in the ESPN RISE state-by-state rankings.

Another big winner in this week's rankings is Sunset (Ore.), which jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 in Oregon after defeating former No. 1 Portland Jesuit (Ore.). In what is proving to be a very balanced year in Oregon -- full of draws and one-loss teams -- Sunset is among the last to be undefeated entering the stretch run.

The first team to finalize a place in the ESPN RISE state-by-state rankings list is O'Gorman (S.D.), which claimed its third straight state title over the week.

Today, we release the weekly ESPN Rise state-by-state rankings with the ESPN Rise FAB 50 to appear Tuesday afternoon on ESPNRise.com.

Boys state-by-state rankings - Fall

October 6, 2009 12:14 AM

By Sheldon Shealer, editor

There is very little question that Illinois soccer is among the nation's best when it comes to the boys' fall high school season.

In addition to the always highly competitive Chicago area, it was the Downstate schools -- Quincy and O'Fallon -- that made noise at the Gateway City Soccer Classic this past weekend that forced an expansion of the Illinois state rankings from five to seven teams. After all, O'Fallon, the new No. 6 in Illinois, beat two-time defending Missouri champ Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) in the third-place match. Early in the tournament, O'Fallon surprised Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.), which entered the contest undefeated and ranked among that state's best teams. O'Fallon lost in the semifinals to eventual champ and FAB 50 top 5 team St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, Kan.). Quincy, meanwhile, advanced to the final where it lost to Aquinas 1-0 on a late goal. On the way to the final, Quincy also edged Rockhurst.

Since teams from eight states competed in the Gateway City Soccer Classic, it allows for a more fair comparison among programs from across state lines. Basically, the results -- pair with previous matches -- makes a connection point from New York to Colorado.

Today, we release the weekly ESPN Rise state-by-state rankings with the ESPN Rise FAB 50 to appear Tuesday afternoon on ESPNRise.com.

Boys state-by-state rankings - Fall

September 15, 2009 5:07 AM

By Sheldon Shealer, editor

Ludlow (Mass.) and Rockhurst Jesuit (Kansas City, Mo.) returned to familiar positions this week -- ranked No. 1 in their respective states.

A third-place finish by Chaminade (St. Louis, Mo.) at the Great Midwest Classic allowed for Rockhurst and Chaminade to swap places in the ESPN RISE state rankings. Rockhurst is riding an 18-match shutout streak. These teams remain on course to meet later this fall.

Ludlow takes over the No. 1 spot after former No. 1 Framingham opened the season with a draw.

There were no other No. 1 changes in the 12 largest fall-playing states this week. However, Westview (Portland, Ore.) and Las Cruces (N.M.) took over the top billing in their states.

Today, we release the weekly ESPN Rise state-by-state rankings with the ESPN Rise FAB 50 to appear Tuesday afternoon on ESPNRise.com.

Derby Co. captures Development title

July 18, 2009 7:41 AM

By U.S. Soccer

A sixth-minute strike by Dzenan Catic provided the Derby County Wolves all they needed to defeat Cal Odyssey 1-0 and earn the 2009 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week Under-15-16 Championship at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Friday.

The Wolves came into the championship with high expectations as the overall No. 1 seed in the playoffs and took control with the early goal, but in the second half Cal Odyssey was the better squad and created a handful for the team from Michigan. Despite controlling possession, Cal didn't put too many dangerous chances on net and the Wolves were able to hold on for their first title in the Development Academy.

"We're thrilled to win the championship, but it's been a long journey that has been beneficial for the players and that's the most important aspect,” said Derby County Wolves and U-15/16 Development Academy Coach of the Year Lars Richters.

Merely seconds after kickoff, Derby County put Cal on their heels, led by forward Reed Losee. The early pressure paid dividends quickly in the shape of a turnover by the Odyssey defense. Vainly trying to relieve the pressure with a long clear, Odyssey sent the ball down the left sideline, but the clearance was collected by Wolves' defender Stefan Gigorakis and he sent the ball back up the sideline to Catic. Getting around two defenders – one with a nifty nutmeg – the midfielder forced his way into the box from the right side. With Odyssey keeper Matt Dishno rushing out to cut down the angle, Catic fired a shot right past him and inside the near post, giving his team the early lead.

"I got a lucky little touch, passed by another guy with a touch, and just shot it,” said Catic. "I didn't even really see the ball go in the net, I just ran around the goal to celebrate with my teammates. It was an incredible feeling. To be in the national final, with fans screaming…I didn't even know what to think at that point.”

Refusing to rest on their lead, Derby County stayed on the attack for the next several minutes. It wasn't until the 15th minute that Cal got their first chance on goal, a long effort from Villyan Bijev that skipped over the ground with pace, eventually going wide of the left hand side of the goal.

One minute later, Derby County was back inside Cal's goal box with a cross from Josh Barens. Though the ball was cleared, it fell out to the top of the box where Jordan Tyler attempted to put a half-volley on frame, but his well-struck attempt went over the bar.

Neither team made substitutions at the half, but Cal Odyssey changed how they performed on the field, keeping control for almost the entire half. Despite constantly sending passes into players into the Derby County box, Cal Odyssey had little to show for all their possession with shots and passes getting blocked by Derby County defenders.

In the 50th minute, Bijev again took a shot with force from 25 yards, but his effort spun high and wide.

One attempt finally got through in the 74th minute, when Nathan Smith dribbled across the box and shot, but with a defender marking him tightly, the ball was slightly deflected. Reacting to his right, Wolves' goalkeeper Adam Grinwis got down to the ground to block it from going into the left corner, giving up no rebound with numerous attackers in the area.

With time winding down, Cal Odyssey continued to push forward while the Wolves just tried to clear through balls from danger. After one last long ball by Cal was caught and punted out by Grinwis, the whistle blew, providing the Wolves with the title.

In the other placement matches, New York Red Bulls, Chicago Magic AS Monaco and Washington Premier FC all won to finish off Finals Week.

Scoring chances were found but neither side could capitalize thanks to great play from Lindsey Luke (Slammers) and Kelly McCormick (So Cal). Jordan O'Brien's free kick in the 64th just cleared the wall to beat McCormick to her left and give Slammers the 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later So Cal was awarded a free kick that Jessica Mandarich bent to the far upper corner past Luke to knot the game at 1-1 in the 72nd.

Ashley Oswald scored in the 31st for Team Boca (Fla.) and the half ended with the same score with Cleveland FC (Ohio) down one.
