Zionsville (Ind.) knocked off a pair of state-ranked foes to inch higher in the Indiana rankings this week while it was pretty much status quo among the top teams in the larger fall-playing states.

The big winner this week was Jesuit (Ore.), which avenged its only loss with a 5-1 victory over Westview (Ore.) in a meeting between the two top-ranked teams in Oregon.

This week, state champions will be crowned in Utah and Montana.

GIRLS SCORES

No. 22 Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) 4, Holy Cross (Ky.) 0: Notre Dame Academy claimed the zDistrict 20 title with the victory.

Dayton Wayne (Ohio) 3, No. 34 Centerville (Ohio) 1: Centerville's undefeated season came to an end Thursday.

Zionsville (Ind.) 2, Noblesville (Ind.) 1: Lindsey Hansen scored with five minutes to play as Zionsville edged Noblesville in a playoff battle between state-ranked teams. Crissy Tchoula gave Noblesville a 1-0 lead. Tiffany Dove scored the equalizer.

The race for No. 1 in Ohio is heating up and it appears any of the current ESPN RISE state-by-state Top 7 teams in the state could very well walk away with the Division 1 title.  The top four teams -- Strongsville, St. Ursula, Walsh Jesuit and Medina -- remain the frontrunners. This week, Walsh Jesuit and St. Ursula swap spots to move Walsh Jesuit next to Medina, the team it tied last week. 

In the most bizarre result of the week, a contest between Villa Joseph Marie (Pa.) and Strath Haven (Pa.) was halted while tied 1-1 late in the first half. VJM pulled its players from the field when there was no trainer to tend to an injured player, according to published reports. The reports indicated VJM coach Rick Finneyfrock thought it was a state rule that the home team -- in this case Strath Haven -- must have a trainer present for the match, thus he refused to continue the match. It was later learned that having a trainer present is merely strongly encouraged, but not a state rule. VJM could be required to forfeit the match, but it was unclear if Strath Haven would pursue such an avenue. Finneyfrock said he is willing to replay the match or pick it up from where it was halted.

For the time being, ESPN RISE is listing the match as a draw, although that will change depending on what the schools decide to do with the contest. If the match is not continued or replayed, the most likely outcome would be striking the result from the record, unless VJM is required to forfeit.

Pennsbury (Pa.) exacted a measure of revenge by defeating Council Rock North (Pa.) in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle in Pennsylvania.

Council Rock North had won the first meeting.

Pennsbury's victory vaults this District 1 team back to No. 1 in the state, where it started the season in the ESPN RISE state-by-state rankings.

Another big winner in this week's rankings is Sunset (Ore.), which jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 in Oregon after defeating former No. 1 Portland Jesuit (Ore.). In what is proving to be a very balanced year in Oregon -- full of draws and one-loss teams -- Sunset is among the last to be undefeated entering the stretch run.

The first team to finalize a place in the ESPN RISE state-by-state rankings list is O'Gorman (S.D.), which claimed its third straight state title over the week.

The East Coast shuffle took place last week thanks in large part to the Downingtown West (Downingtown, Pa.) vs. Pennington Prep (Pennington, N.J.) match, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

That result helped complete the connection of top teams in the following states -- Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Although this was Downingtown West's only non-Pennsylvania opponent, Pennington has played teams from Maryland and Kentucky, and those teams have competed against ranked teams in the other states.

There is very little question that Illinois soccer is among the nation's best when it comes to the boys' fall high school season.

In addition to the always highly competitive Chicago area, it was the Downstate schools -- Quincy and O'Fallon -- that made noise at the Gateway City Soccer Classic this past weekend that forced an expansion of the Illinois state rankings from five to seven teams. After all, O'Fallon, the new No. 6 in Illinois, beat two-time defending Missouri champ Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) in the third-place match. Early in the tournament, O'Fallon surprised Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.), which entered the contest undefeated and ranked among that state's best teams. O'Fallon lost in the semifinals to eventual champ and FAB 50 top 5 team St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, Kan.). Quincy, meanwhile, advanced to the final where it lost to Aquinas 1-0 on a late goal. On the way to the final, Quincy also edged Rockhurst.

Since teams from eight states competed in the Gateway City Soccer Classic, it allows for a more fair comparison among programs from across state lines. Basically, the results -- pair with previous matches -- makes a connection point from New York to Colorado.

Here's a fun fact ... 23 states offer boys and girls soccer in the fall. Four of those states -- Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Rhode Island hold the distinction of being the only states where the No. 1 spot is held by the boys' and girls' programs at the same school.

LaSalle Academy (R.I.) has been No. 1 in Rhode Island boys and girls since the preseason. The other three schools to join this elite group came to its current ranking this week. In New Hampshire, Manchester Central girls held the top spot but the school's boys' team won a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up to elevate it to the top. In Maine, a loss by defending champ Waterville allowed Scarborough girls to inherit the No. 1 ranking, which the school's boys' team already held. In New Mexico,two losses by Las Cruces boys' team allowed Sandia to move up in the rankings.

Council Rock North (Pa.) was the big winner this week, moving from No. 2 to No. 1 in the Pennsylvania rankings after posting a 2-0 victory against former No. 1 Pennsbury (Pa.) last week.

In fact, there were a trio of No. 1 vs. No. 2 state match-ups last week, and in all three cases, the No. 2 team won. In New Hampshire, Manchester Central edged Pinkerton Academy, and in South Dakota, Lincoln returned to No. 1 after routing Aberdeen.

The other 30 state No. 1s listed by ESPN RISE combined for a 62-0-3 week.

These New York Catholic League powers played to a scoreless draw Thursday, highlighting a strong slate of national contests. These teams have one more regular season match remaining against each other and could meet two more times during postseason play.

A season-opening tie by Eastlake (Sammamish, Wash.) bumped this recent FAB 50 No. 1 team to No. 4 in its state rankings, but No. 3 in the ESPN RISE state ranking. Either way, it makes for a new FAB 50 No. 1 team this week.

Not only did Eastlake tie, but also South Side (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) drew and defending FAB 50 national champ Pennington Prep (Pennington, N.J.) lost last week resulting in new state No. 1s in New Jersey and New York.

Ludlow (Mass.) and Rockhurst Jesuit (Kansas City, Mo.) returned to familiar positions this week -- ranked No. 1 in their respective states.

A third-place finish by Chaminade (St. Louis, Mo.) at the Great Midwest Classic allowed for Rockhurst and Chaminade to swap places in the ESPN RISE state rankings. Rockhurst is riding an 18-match shutout streak. These teams remain on course to meet later this fall.

Ludlow takes over the No. 1 spot after former No. 1 Framingham opened the season with a draw.

There were no other No. 1 changes in the 12 largest fall-playing states this week. However, Westview (Portland, Ore.) and Las Cruces (N.M.) took over the top billing in their states.

With FAB 50-ranked Montgomery and Maria Carrillo, both from Santa Rosa, Calif., knocking off Alta (Utah) this past weekend, look for the California programs to receiving a bump up in this week's FAB 50.
