Thursday shocker - Jesuit upset

This just in ... Davis (Calif.) upset FAB 50 No. 2 Sacramento Jesuit (Calif.) on PKs in the CIF-San Joaquin Division I boys semifinals Thursday night.
Thursday's match ended in a 1-1 draw with Davis winning on PKs 4-2.
The result bounces Jesuit from No. 1 consideration and moves a pair of New York squads - Brentwood and St. Anthony's - into the top two spots. St. Anthony's is finished, and Brentwood plays in the state semifinals this weekend. A Brentwood sweep earns it a national title. Otherwise, the FAB 50 fall No. 1 will go to St. Anthony's.

Non-league games often are the most important to the FAB 50 rankings because it allows for crossover contests that pits programs from different states, regions or classifications.
Such was the case Wednesday as Central Bucks East, a Class AAAA state title challenger in Pennsylvania, edged Holy Ghost Prep, A Class AA state favorite, 1-0 in double overtime. Sean Peckham netted the winner.

Broughton's stay at No. 1 will be shortlived in 2008, as the reigning FAB 50 fall champion had its undefeated run end at 54 matches following a 1-0 setback to perennial Class 3A challenger TC Roberson.
Most of the East Coast teams start play this week, however, the early action around the country has resulted in changes at the top of the following states: Indiana (now Westfield), Ohio (now Sylvania Northview) and West Virginia (now Martinsburg).

Girls state-by-state rankings
September 1, 2008 2:14 AM
By Sheldon Shealer, editor
Although many of the East Coast states do not begin fall sports play until after Labor Day, the rest of the country has started, and we have the first update to the state-by-state girls soccer rankings. Each week, we will release the state-by-state rankings on Monday followed by the ESPN RISE FAB 50 rankings Tuesday.
The big winner this week was Noblesville, taking over No. 1 in Indiana. Noblesville and Zionsville are undefeated and Zionsville posted an early win over Carmel, which defeated Bishop Dwenger, which defeated Indianapolis Cathedral. At this point, Noblesville has earned the right to No. 1 - but plenty of tests to that ranking are yet to come.
St. Ursula (Ohio) helped secure that state's place among the nation's elite with a comfortable win over Kentucky No. 2 Notre Dame Academy (Ky.).
Make sure to visit ESPNRise.com for the updated FAB 50 rankings Tuesday.

McDonogh Invitational pairings set
August 27, 2008 3:00 AM
By Sheldon Shealer, editor
The pairings are set, and the most important early season girls soccer tournament favors a McDonogh (Md.) appearance in the final.
McDonogh, the host school, has the easiest road to the final of the McDonogh Invitational, but by no means will it be a walk-over.
The two-day event featuring eight teams, five in the preseason ESPN RISE FAB 50 rankings, will take place Sept. 5-6 at McDonogh School outside of Baltimore.
All eight teams play Friday at 5 p.m. McDonogh faces Episcopal (Pa.), Paul VI (Va.) takes on Sacred heart (Ky.), Bishop O'Connell (Va.) plays Pennington (N.J.) and St. John's (D.C.) matches up with defending 3A state champ Urbana (Md.).
The McDonogh-Episcopal and Paul VI-Sacred Heart winners sqaure off in one morning semifinal while the other features the O'Connell-Pennington and St. John's-Urbana winners. The championship match is set for 3:15 p.m. Saturday.
O'Connell, Pennington and St. John's all are in the FAB 50 Top 25 - and only one of those teams can reach the final, given the pairings.
ESPN RISE will be at the McDonogh Invitational providing daily coverage.

Looking Ahead: Massachusetts girls soccer
August 12, 2008 12:59 AM
Our look toward the fall takes us to Massachusetts today, where the state offers a pair of girls soccer teams with solid arguments for Top 10 consideration.
Defending state champion and FAB 50 Top 10 team Acton-Boxboro returns midfielder Hayley Brock, the Boston area's Division I Player of the Year, and first-team forward Cassie Wagner. The other team with Top 10 creditentals is Whitman-Hanson, featuring the Mewis sisters - Kristen and Samantha. Kristen was a first-team Boston area pick last year after a 28-goal, 21-assist season as the team suffered only one loss - in the state semifinals to Acton-Boxboro.
Of course, questions remain whether the Mewis sisters will play high school soccer since both currently are with the under-17 girls national team as it makes a bid for a FIFA world championship.
The following is a list of other Massachusetts girls players to watch this fall:
Hayley Brock, Acton-Boxboro, MF
Jillian Kinter, Newburyport
Kristen Mewis, Whitman-Hanson, MF
*Samantha Mewis, Whitman-Hanson, F
A.J. Millet, Westford, GK
Nicola Salvi, Dedham, MF

Looking Ahead: Connecticut soccer
August 7, 2008 3:00 PM
As we near the release of the ESPNRise FAB 50, we will take time to provide a snapshot of many top fall-playing states. Today's focus is Connecticut.
Boys
Teams: Westhill is the preseason favorite. The squad went 15-0-2 last year and was knocked out of the playoffs on PKs. With forward Felipe Rodriguez returning, Westhill figures to make another run at the Class LL (large school) state title.
Players to Watch:
*Leon Carby, Watkinson School, MF
*Clifford Lyle, Stamford, MF
Felipe Rodriguez, Westhill, F
Tony Sendra, Naugatuck, MF
Carl Stensland, EO Smith, MF
*-indicates a rising junior
Girls
Teams: It appears the soccer power of Connecticut will remain in Trumbull - both Trumbull High School and St. Joseph in Trumbull. St. Joseph's was the state No. 1 last season. Trumbull likely will begin as state No. 1 this year with three returning All-State performers from 2007.
Players to Watch:
Michelle Baj, South Windsor
Tania Domingos, Newtown
Shauna Edwards, Southington
Kristen Forster, Trumbull
Alyssa Gillespie, St. Joseph
*Jackie McSally, Masuk
Sara Nagle, Manchester
Sierra Phelan, Conard
Erika Robbins, Glastonbury
Meredith Rogers, Bristol Central
*Jessica Schloth, St. Joseph
Kasey Schulz, Newtown
Celine Vitale, Trumbull

A farewell tour for Jacobson?
August 6, 2008 11:23 PM
Posted by Sheldon Shealer, editor
First, Martin Jacobson saved himself. Then, he started saving the soccer-playing youths of New York City, and in the process built a dynasty at Martin Luther King in Manhattan, N.Y.
Now, Jacobson is hinting that it might be time to move on.
He told ESPNRise that this will be his final year at Martin Luther King as a teacher and likely as athletic director. He has a chance to remain as the boys soccer coach in 2009, but said that it would be difficult to remain as coach without having the full-day contact with his athletes.
MLK is the two-time defending PSAL champion, and the program has claimed 10 of the past 12 PSAL crowns, all under Jacobson. MLK will be a preseason Top 5 team when the ESPNRise FAB 50 rankings are released later this month.
Jacobson's heart-touching story of overcoming heroine addiction is well-documented. His trials and tribulations with the PSAL were featured on 60 Minutes during the early 2000s. More recently, his work with MLK will be the subject of a motion picture titled American Kings.

Welcome to High School Soccer on ESPN
July 8, 2008 7:24 AM
After being hosted for more than four years by Rivals.com, the StudentSportsSoccer.com Web site is now part of ESPN.
This Blog format is only temporary.
It is never easy to switch in the Internet world, but going to the Worldwide Leader in Sports is an opportunity that excites the people behind all of the sites in the Student Sports Inc. family. These sites on ESPN are going to be off the charts for the athletes, coaches, parents, and fans throughout the country.
We will continue to cover the key summer club events with an eye toward the FAB 50 preseason soccer rankings, which will be released in early August. In addition, our coverage of everything high school soccer-related, from player rankings, team rankings, records, recruiting and features will be enhanced in the coming months.
We need to credit four people who contributed mightily to this site becoming part of ESPN who have passed away in recent years. This would be Student Sports co-founder Nelson Tennis, former Student Sports marketing director Kim Blankinship, former team sales manager and longtime supporter Jerry Keane and Larry Bark, father of president and co-founder Andy Bark. Of course, the original Student Sports Soccer Web site would not have been possible without the work of Barry Redmond, who passed away in 2001.
We invite you to keep coming back to this site every day to see exclusive, original content that is not available anywhere else.
Sincerely,
Sheldon Shealer
