While no one knows how the Brett Favre story will play out, one thing is certain: The Green Bay Packers have more than enough salary cap space to take him back.
The Packers have a little more than $32 million in cap room, second-most in the NFL. Only the Kansas City Chiefs, with $36 million, have more.
If he returns to the Packers, Favre's $12 million base salary would be added to the $800,000 in prorated bonus money, giving him a $12.8 million cap number. In reality, however, the Packers already count $1.6 million in "dead money" against their cap to account for Favre's retirement. That figure is the total amount of proration left on his contract after the 2007 season.
So, in essence, a Favre return would consume an additional $11.2 million in cap money. If it ever comes to that.
