As part of our recent survey, ESPN.com asked NFL head coaches to identify which player they thought teams would select first overall in a leaguewide draft of current players. In other words, if each current player suddenly became available in a supplemental-style draft, which player would teams want to select above all others?
Twenty-nine of the 32 head coaches responded to this particular question and Tom Brady was the runaway winner. Twenty-two coaches said they thought Brady would be the first player selected in such a draft. Six head coaches went with Peyton Manning. One head coach apparently wasn't taking the survey as seriously. Either that or he's a huge Jason Taylor fan. Taylor received one of the 29 votes.
Coaches were granted anonymity for their candor. Brady is two years younger than Manning and coming off a better season. A team couldn't go wrong with either of them. The coaches' responses affirmed the importance of the quarterback position above all others. Even defensive-minded head coaches would take a great quarterback over a great anything else.
