Longtime NFL quarterback Kelly Holcomb, who suffered a neck injury last year while playing for the Minnesota Vikings, has followed through on his plan to retire and will join the broadcast crew at his alma mater.
Holcomb will be a sideline reporter for Middle Tennessee State. The school also will induct him Sept. 6 into its Hall of Fame.
Holcomb, who turns 35 on Wednesday, spent time with six teams after starting his career with Tampa Bay in 1995. He was traded twice last year, first from Buffalo to Philadelphia during the offseason and then from the Eagles to the Vikings near the end of the preseason.
With experience in so many different offensive schemes, Holcomb would be an ideal candidate for a mid-season call from a quarterback-needy NFL team. But based on this interview published in the Tennessean, he appears to have little interest in returning.
Holcomb's neck has healed, but the injury itself -- Eagles defensive end Juqua Thomas inadvertently drove his head into the turf Oct. 28 -- could have been much worse.
"I had a lot of people tell me ... that I was blessed," Holcomb said after the injury. "There are a lot of people who have had the same thing and broke their neck. Looking at it ... and the way I hit the ground and bounced off the turf, I was lucky."
