Black and Blue all over: Camp countdown begins

GREEN BAY, WIS. -- After a night of celebration, the Green Bay Packers have to get down to business. Training camp opens in a week. Their draft class remains unsigned, as does running back Ryan Grant, an exclusive-rights free agent who is pushing for a long-term extension.

And then, there is that little Brett Favre issue, which continues its run as the lead story of Black and Blue all over.

There are no indications that Favre spoke with general manager Ted Thompson or coach Mike McCarthy during Saturday night's Packers Hall of Fame induction. But then again, the only media members allowed in the event were those who purchased tickets months ago.
Despite the gesture, Favre and the Packers still have to resolve "what appears to be irreconcilable differences," writes Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
Retired Packers safety LeRoy Butler didn't think Favre would show up. But in the end, "he wants the attention, too," Butler told the Wisconsin State Journal.
Free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper recently contacted the Detroit Lions about a job, according to the Detroit News. The Lions are not known to be seeking a veteran backup for Jon Kitna.
One player the Lions did host on a visit recently was linebacker Takeo Spikes.
Has Kyle Orton improved enough to win the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback job? That's one of the Bears' top questions as they enter training camp, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Minnesota Vikings center Matt Birk called the attention paid to his absence from the team's offseason program "silly." He added: "I'm not the cornerstone of the franchise for crying out loud."
External playoff expectations "beats the alternative," Vikings coach Brad Childress said in a Q&A with the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
