Although they insist they are confident in rookie Matt Forte, the Chicago Bears added some insurance Tuesday by signing free agent Kevin Jones to a one-year contract.
Jones had surgery to repair a torn knee ligament earlier this year and it's hard to imagine he will be ready to participate in much of training camp when the Bears open next week. But Jones provides the team some low-risk insurance, especially if he starts camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, and could end up being a surprise contributor during the second half of the season.
Jones also considered Pittsburgh and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but clearly his best opportunity for maximum playing time -- when he gets healthy -- is in Chicago. After releasing former starter Cedric Benson, the Bears likely will begin camp with Forte as the No. 1 running back, backed up by Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe.
