With Peyton Manning due to miss four to six weeks after having an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee, could we still see him in a preseason game?
Well, the Colts play five times before the regular season starts, beginning with the Hall of Fame Game Aug. 8, and finishing with home games in quick succession to open Lucas Oil Stadium on Aug. 24 and 28.
Four weeks would take Manning to Aug. 11, with three practice games remaining.
Six weeks would take him to the Aug. 25, the day after preseason game No. 4.
So, yes, he could still get a bit of action in the preseason.
In the meantime, if you consider Jim Sorgi unproven, how do you feel about Josh Betts and Adam Tafralis? They are Indianapolis' two other quarterbacks, provided the Colts stick with what they've got.
Betts, who played at Miami (Ohio), first signed with Indianapolis on May 5, 2006, and was on the practice squad that season and again last year.
Tafralis is an undrafted rookie out of San Jose State.
Manning wouldn't have gone deep into preseason games anyway, and might not have played at all in the finale.
But with Sorgi set to move up as Manning recovers, the two youngsters will have the opportunity to get additional snaps in practices and preseason games. Meanwhile, the Colts' faithful will be wondering if Manning will get enough time with Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, Dallas Clark and the rest of his targets in order to be sharp when Chicago visits to kickoff the 2008 season on Sept. 7.
