Until we have more information on the Marvin Harrison incident in North Philly, we'll continue to see columns like this one from Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star. I usually think Bob has an interesting take on things, but I'm not sure anyone wants to read a column about why he can't really write a column about Harrison right now.
Surely he's more creative than that. Kravitz comes off as a little sanctimonious when he spends several paragraphs patting himself on the back for his restraint.
"Isn't this where I take a stand against athletes and gun ownership?"
Or where I start speculating whether Harrison, an enigmatic and deeply private sort, is either likely to be involved in this shooting or, in fact, the most unlikely man on earth to do something like this?
But I don't.
Because I can't and I won't.
Not yet."
I like the "Cat in the Hat" rhythm that Kravitz uses, but he's acting as if he's taking a final stand for journalism. Spare me the melodrama. And yes, I'd love for you to address athletes and guns. It seems like the perfect time to do it.
No matter what we find out about Harrison's involvement in the shooting, I think it's firmly established that he owned the high-powered Belgian handgun. Is that wrong in itself? Well, it's certainly not against the law.
But that doesn't mean we have to sit around and moan about not being able to write a column. Mike Freeman certainly provided an interesting take Monday. You might not agree with his stance on guns (especially folks in my state), but he didn't spend 750 words explaining why he couldn't have an opinion.
Now, back to Williamson in the Denver bureau.
