The honors continue to rush in for Emmitt Thomas.

The Chiefs announced Monday that they will retire Thomas' No. 18 this season at Arrowhead Stadium. The newly elected Pro Football Hall of Fame member played 13 years as a defensive back for Kansas City.

The Chiefs will honor Thomas, now a Falcons assistant coach, on Oct. 19 when Kansas City hosts Tennessee. In addition to getting his number retired, Thomas will receive his Hall of Fame ring during the ceremony.

This is a classy move by the Chiefs, who have long made an effort to honor their past greats. The Hall of Fame election was long overdue for Thomas, who was not only a great cornerback but has been a terrific longtime assistant coach in the NFL.

I've gotten a chance to get to know Thomas while covering his teams in Green Bay and Minnesota. He's always been a class act. It's nice to see his year of recognition continue.
