Other side of Jackson trade gets a shot

With Seahawks guard Rob Sims heading for arthroscopic surgery, Mansfield Wrotto has a chance to become more than the answer to a trivia question asking, "Which player did Seattle draft with the 2007 fourth-round choice acquired from San Francisco for veteran receiver Darrell Jackson?"

Coach Mike Holmgren was initially hesitant about trading his leading receiver to a division rival, but the move didn't hurt Seattle because the 49ers' offense struggled beyond reasonable expectations. Jackson has subsequently landed in Denver.

Wrotto hasn't done much for Seattle so far, but if the Seahawks are right about new line coach Mike Solari, Wrotto stands a better chance at developing into a potential contributor.

Sims' surgery isn't considered serious enough to remove him from the equation as the projected starter on the right side. But every snap with the starters should help Wrotto, even if Sims is back in the lineup this summer. The experience might benefit Wrotto even more if the Seahawks weren't already practicing without left tackle Walter Jones and center Chris Spencer.
