In a period filled with post-Super Bowl turmoil, Giants fans received some good news this afternoon. Right guard Chris Snee, the son-in-law of head coach Tom Coughlin, has agreed in principle to a six-year extension, according to the Newark Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo. The newspaper didn't report the financial terms of the deal, but said that Snee would be one of the top five highest-paid players at his position. It's a smart move by GM Jerry Reese to go ahead and lock Snee down since he's set to become a free agent at the end of the 2008 season.
I spent some time with Snee during Super Bowl week, and he sounds a lot like his no-nonsense father-in-law. He said Coughlin has always treated him like any other player on the field and went out of his way to make him comfortable during family holidays.
Shaun O'Hara has become the spokesman for the offensive line, but Snee is the best player. He and O'Hara have constantly defended Eli Manning over the years and were thrilled when he led the team to a Super Bowl title this past season.
In addition to extending Snee's contract, the Giants signed their fourth-, fifth- and sixth-round picks Tuesday. Reese has high hopes for linebackers Jonathan Goff and Bryan Kehl, and he's told quarterback Andre Woodson that he has the opportunity to be one of the best sixth-round draft choices in club history. Woodson, who starred for Kentucky, was devastated when he fell into the sixth round, but Reese has told him to use that anger to his advantage.
