It would appear the Giants have found a way to move on since winning the Super Bowl four months ago. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress suited up for the first day of a mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, but made a "business decision" not to take the field.
Disgruntled tight end Jeremy Shockey, a forgotten man during the Super Bowl run, made his presence felt by hiding out in the locker room instead of joining his injured teammates in the peloton.
Daily Hashmarks reader and New York Daily News columnist Gary Myers thinks the Giants should give Burress the new contract he wants and trade Shockey. He thinks the Giants should've taken the Saints' offer of a second-round draft choice for Shockey in April. Are the Saints still interested? I was told this morning that New Orleans still covets Shockey.
A reader named Bill was kind enough to forward a transcript from Trey Wingo's interview with Drew Rosenhaus from two months ago on NFL Live. Rosenhaus represents both Shockey and Burress.
WINGO: Is [Shockey] completely healthy?
ROSENHAUS: Yes, he is. Now, this is something I can talk about. Jeremy has been cleared. His ankle is now 100 percent. The fracture has healed, the ligaments have healed. He's running, he's doing everything, so that is good news. Jeremy has been cleared by doctors and he is ready to play. He needs to, obviously, continue to rehabilitate, but he's going to be ready for any of the challenges that are coming up in the spring.
Well, except for the first challenge: Actually showing his face on the practice field. Shockey is a gifted player, but I think the Giants are fed up with his me-first ways. If they can get a second-round pick for Shockey, it's probably time to do the deal. I think Eli Manning would secretly applaud the deal, but that's another blog entry.
