Simeon Rice made it very clear today that he is now the active leading all-time sack master in the NFL. Rice is ranked 12th on the all-time list with 122 sacks. With Michael Strahan retiring, Rice moves up to the No. 1 active player on the list.
The only problem is Rice is without a job after being cut by Tampa Bay, Denver and Indianapolis last year. Still, Rice, 34, said he plans on adding to his sack total.
"I am not retired," Rice said. "Some team is going to get a very good player. I'm healthy now after being an imposter last season because of my shoulder injury. All I need for some team to say 'we're going to give this cat a chance.' I can be an impact player again."
Rice said he had preliminary talks with Detroit earlier in the offseason but hasn't spoken to any team lately.
"When teams call, I'll be ready," Rice said. "I'm working out."
Meanwhile, Rice lauded Strahan. Rice said that he and Strahan often "butted heads because we each thought we were better than the other" but was nothing but complimentary today.
"Strahan went out on top and on his own terms," Rice said. "No one can question his greatness. The guy went out (with) 141 sacks. He was one of the best ever."
