The Chargers gave themselves some insurance at center with the addition of former Pro Bowl center Jeremy Newberry. The Chargers and Newberry have been talking for several weeks.

San Diego brought in Newberry because its starter, standout Nick Hardwick, is coming off a foot injury that may extend into the regular season. Cory Withrow is currently working with the first team. Newberry and Withrow will now fight it out to potentially be the starter at the beginning of the regular season.
