Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams continued his eventful offseason with a trip to Oklahoma City over the weekend to throw out the first pitch of a minor-league baseball game. Fortunately, no one was injured.
After leaving the mound, Williams told the local newspaper, The Oklahoman, that he was taking the latest round of criticism in stride. He even suggested that Jesus may have encountered similar hardships.
"Ever since I've rededicated my life to Christ I've caught way more persecution now," he said. "But it's a beautiful thing because I know it's a breakthrough coming for me. I welcome it. What makes me any better than Christ? He was persecuted and I've been persecuted. My teammates know where my heart is. They know where my mind is at."
I often find myself asking the question, "What makes Roy Williams any better than Christ?" And I still don't have the answer.
Williams apparently believes that his faith has made him more of a lightning-rod for criticism. It's an interesting theory, but it sounds like another excuse to me. I don't think Roy's personal beliefs have anything to do with how he's covered in the local media.
If he wants the "persecution" to stop, he simply needs to show up and make plays this season. He loves to paint himself as the victim in all of this, but in reality, he's been given every chance to succeed in Dallas. As I explained recently, people at Valley Ranch have grown tired of defending him.
Darren Woodson's not coming back. At some point, Williams needs to grow up and start acting like the impact player he was supposed to be. And if wants to stay in Dallas, he better do it in a hurry.
