The Bucs finally started to trim their collection of quarterbacks Friday, releasing Bruce Gradkowski.
For those doing the math, that leaves Tampa Bay with Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown, Chris Simms and Josh Johnson on the roster. The Bucs also hold the rights to Jake Plummer, but he's retired and that's not going to change.
The departure of Gradkowski makes it pretty clear what the Bucs plan to do at quarterback. Simms will be traded or released before all is said and done and the Bucs will go to training camp with Garcia, Griese, McCown and Johnson.
Logic would say McCown and Simms are competing for the final roster spot and that's probably the case. But anything's possible when it comes to quarterbacks and coach Jon Gruden. There's an outside chance the Bucs could keep four quarterbacks on the regular-season roster.
But here's one other scenario worth pondering: What if McCown, who showed some promise late last season, and Johnson both have strong camps? It's possible the Bucs could let Griese walk and go with two young backups for Garcia.
