The news of Denver quarterback Jay Cutler's diabetes was buzzing around the Chargers' headquarters Friday morning as the team assembled for its minicamp this weekend.
"It's unfortunate," said San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers, who had a famous shouting match with Cutler on the field during a Christmas Eve Monday Night Football game in San Diego.
Cutler said Friday that he dropped from 238 pounds to 203 pounds from October to December. The Chargers visited Denver in early October and then Denver visited San Diego in December. Rivers said he saw the transformation.
"When they came here I noticed he lost a lot of weight," Rivers said. "You could tell. He was a pretty big kid and he just seemed skinny when they came here."
Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson said he felt badly for Cutler because he knows what he is going through. Tomlinson said he has a good friend who, like Cutler, has Type 1 diabetes, and who has to take insulin shots daily.
"It's a terrible thing," Tomlinson said. "But it's treatable and I know he'll be able to play. I wish him the best."
