What happened to Roy Williams?

When the Cowboys selected safety Roy Williams in the first round of the 2002 draft, they thought he would become one of the most dynamic players in the league. Owner Jerry Jones and his scouting director Larry Lacewell envisioned someone similar to John Lynch in Tampa Bay, but they believed Williams' punishing style would make him even more valuable.

Six years later, things haven't quite panned out. Yes, he's been to five Pro Bowls, but he's more famous for causing the league to enact a horse-collar rule. Over the past month, he has gone on local radio and talked about how he almost prays that the ball is not thrown his way in certain coverages. Team leader Greg Ellis responded by going public with the fact that Williams works out alone and rarely spends time with his teammates anymore.

In a column I'm working on for tomorrow, I'll try to explain what went wrong for Williams and how he's lost favor in the team's locker room. There are rumblings that the Cowboys might cut him after training camp, but I think he'll play through the season. But unless something changes, I don't think Williams will be a Cowboy in 2009.
