Browns hard-pressed to land Law or Sheppard

After this week's serious knee injury to cornerback Daven Holly, the Cleveland Browns could use a big-name replacement such as free agent Ty Law or Lito Sheppard of the Philadelphia Eagles.

But it looks unlikely that the Browns will land either, according to general manager Phil Savage.

"The issue for the 'big-name player' would be the actual cash out the door budget-wise," Savage said. "We're pretty much pressed up against our budget internally. So that's going to eliminate certain players unless they have a change of heart, and you don't really expect that.''

Law, 34, has lofty credentials as a five-time Pro Bowler, but he won't come cheap. And trying to get Sheppard would require a trade and possibly a new long-term deal.

Cleveland has given away a rash of draft picks over the past year, including its third and fifth rounder for 2009. In the past few months the team also gave new contracts to running back Jamal Lewis, quarterback Derek Anderson, receiver Donte Stallworth and defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams.

For now it appears the Browns will sit tight with Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald as the starters and try to find a more affordable option to serve as the third cornerback.
