The Atlanta Falcons signing former Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan to a six-year deal Tuesday all but assures there will be no repeat for rookie signal callers in 2007. Ryan will be in training camp on time and Baltimore Ravens rookie Joe Flacco already is working on securing a five-year deal.

Last year's top two rookie quarterbacks -- Oakland Raiders' JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn of the Cleveland Browns -- both staged lengthy and ugly contract disputes. Quinn missed much of training camp and Russell's holdout stretched into the regular season.

Neither Russell nor Quinn had productive rookie seasons, in part, because of the missed preparation time during the summer. Ryan, and likely Flacco, are expected to be in training camp on time, which can only enhance their chances of making an impact right away.
