For John Lynch getting in NFL playing shape is all about variety.

'"My body needs different kinds of workouts," said Lynch, is working on his on this offseason opposed to training at the Denver Broncos' offseason conditioning program. The previous four years, Lynch trained with the team but is now working out on his own, the way he had done for several years earlier in his career.

But after coming to accord with coach Mike Shanahan to return for his 16th NFL season, Lynch, who'll turn 37 in September, asked to train on his own. A couple times a week he works in his hometown of San Diego with a trainer he has known for years. Lynch also works with his brother-in-law, former NFL tight end John Allred. Included in Lynch's regimen is hill running, working on an obstacle course and barefoot running on the beach.

"It's all about my doing what makes me comfortable at this point in the career," Lynch said. "It's all going very well and I will be ready for the season."

Lynch is not guaranteed to start in Denver as the team has added three safeties this offseason. He knows the deal but said he is confident his varied approach to training this offseason will help him earn the starting nod again.
