I've made a few calls to my people with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and they're a bit skeptical about Randy Moss' new team. I'm told that most team owners already have some infrastructure in place when they make this type of announcement.
Right now, Moss is only missing a driver, manufacturer and sponsors. But maybe those are minor details. The Patriots wide receiver will soon learn how much of a money pit NASCAR ownership can be.
I watched two of the most talented businessmen I know, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, struggle mightily on the NASCAR circuit. It's pretty much impossible to assemble a team on the cheap and expect any results. And Aikman and Staubach's Hall of Fame Racing never truly got off the ground.
I wish Moss all the luck in the world, but this doesn't sound like a sound investment to me. I can think of several hobbies that won't leave you broke. But the Truck Series isn't on the list.
Reporting live for Hashmarks, I'm Matt Mosley.
