Some very sad news from The Charlotte Observer. Former Carolina Panthers center Curtis Whitley, 39, was found dead in Texas, family members told The Observer.

Whitley, who played at Clemson, was with the Panthers in their inaugural season (1995) and during their 1996 season in which they went to the NFC Championship Game. But Whitley's time with the Panthers was troubled.

Whitley was suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He talked openly about his drug use in the fine book, "Year of the Cat'', which was co-written by my former co-workers Charles Chandler and Scott Fowler.

Whitley went to the Oakland Raiders in 1997.
