Torry Holt's contract counts $9.2 million against the Rams' salary cap this season and $10.2 million in 2009, substantial increases from recent seasons. Those numbers mean little if Holt remains productive despite recent knee problems. But with the Rams dumping fellow St. Louis mainstay Isaac Bruce this offseason, Holt knows he can take nothing for granted.
Holt clearly had Bruce's exit on his mind when discussing his future with St. Louis reporters this week. Holt, who played at North Carolina State, even talked about finishing his career with Carolina if the opportunity arises. His contract expires after the 2009 season.
Holt has caught at least 91 passes in each of the last six seasons. He has caught at least 81 passes in each of the last eight seasons. His yards per reception have declined from the 14s into the 12s over the last two seasons, however. Bruce's production dropped sharply at about age 33. Holt turns 32 next month.
