A lot is being made of John Harbaugh's transition from a former special teams and secondary coach to head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. But Harbaugh believes he's ready for the transition.
Harbaugh coached special teams for nine years with the Philadelphia Eagles and was their secondary coach for one season before earning the Ravens' lead post.
It should be noted that Jim Zorn, a friend of Harbaugh, also is making the transition this year from a former position coach to head coach of the Washington Redskins. Zorn was the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks in 2007.
The pair, if successful, could mark the beginning of a changing landscape in the NFL.
"I think it's more of you're not that locked down to a particular path,'' Harbaugh said at the league meetings in West Palm Beach, Fla., today. "You're kind of looking more at the qualities of your players, [and] how a particular coach is going to match up to your players."
Harbaugh is not green. He is in his 25th year of coaching and 11th in the NFL. His father, Jack, was a longtime collegiate coach, and his more famous brother, Jim, is the head football coach at Stanford.
