Turning over new Leaf

In a shocking development, my editors thought it might be good to track down former Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf for a series on draft busts. Of course, I sort of eased my way into the "bust" angle during a 45-minute phone conversation with Leaf on Monday.

Known for his boorish behavior toward reporters during his playing days, Leaf was exceedingly gracious with his time yesterday. And I'm pleased to report that he's as happy as he's ever been.

At age 31, he's the quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator at West Texas A&M in Canyon, which is located near Amarillo. And last spring, he also became the school's golf coach. Now, Leaf finds himself driving a 15-passenger bus to golf tournaments.

"It's a different experience," said Leaf. "I don't know if I was ever meant to have that flashy lifestyle."

I'll share the rest of the conversation in our upcoming draft package. Leaf's ultimate dream now is to move back to his home state, Montana, and become a college head coach.

By the way, I'm still recovering from last night's national title game. Did I mention that I was sitting 24 rows up at halfcourt?

I didn't even care who won, but I found myself going nuts when Mario Chalmers nailed the 3-pointer to put it in overtime.
