Garrard's deal is done

The Jaguars are holding a news conference at 3 p.m. today to announce quarterback David Garrard's contract extension. The two sides have been close on a deal for the last few weeks.

Garrard had been asking for something similar to Tony Romo's $36 million guaranteed. I don't have the numbers yet on Garrard's new contract, but it would shock me if he received that much. I think the guaranteed portion of the contract will come in at about $28 million.

This is an important day for the Jaguars organization, which spent years searching for consistent play at quarterback following the Mark Brunell era. Garrard's ability to avoid mistakes and remain patient with an average bunch of receivers has been impressive.

I think Garrard is either the seventh or eighth best quarterback in the league. I'm curious to see what you think.

David Garrard
