Dolphins putting it on the lines

For a team with three of the top 66 choices, the Dolphins resisted the temptation to put style before substance. They did draft a quarterback, but they snagged Chad Henne later (66th) than we might have expected him to be available.

Miami has taken two offensive linemen (Jake Long, Shawn Murphy), two defensive linemen (Phillip Merling, Kendall Langford) and, in Henne, a quarterback to compete with 2007 second-round choice John Beck.

It's impossible to know if these players will justify their draft status, but the philosophy appears sound for a team with so many needs.

The Dolphins acquired the 110th pick, used for Murphy, in a trade with Chicago for Marty Booker. Prior to that trade, the Dolphins were the only team in the league without a choice in the middle third of this draft (picks 85 through 168).
