Favre on the comeback trail?

Los Angeles Times NFL writer Sam Farmer interrupted Day 7 of the Pacman standoff to report that Brett Favre's agent has been quietly gauging the interest that teams might have in trading for his client. Citing unnamed league sources, The Times also reported that Favre's retirement was partially caused by frustration over the Packers' decision not to pursue Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss in free agency.

As you might expect, the agent, Bus Cook, vehemently denied the report in an interview with the newspaper.

"That's news to me," Cook said. "I don't think that has anything to do with anything. He's retired, period, point blank."

Of course, this is the same man who suggested that the Packers weren't exactly devastated by Favre's decision to retire. Cook spent most of his Thursday afternoon shooting down The Times report.

"That is absolutely false," he told ESPN. "Absolutely false, and you can quote me on that."

The problem for Cook is that he's dealing with one of the most respected guys in the business. Sam's known for a lot of things (elaborate Christmas cards, agonizing over leads, chronic sunburn), but filing false reports isn't on the list.

Sam's sources didn't indicate whether Favre knew about the alleged inquiries. Until he files his retirement papers or reaches age 50, we will speculate about a possible comeback.

And you can't blame the agent for trying to drum up some interest. He just lost a major commision, so I'm thinking he'd be fairly supportive of a comeback.
